I want to start of by saying I do love Blues Funeral but I listened to it this evening all the way through for the 1st time in quite a long while and couldn't help thinking pretty much every song goes on for too long.
It's not a bad thing having a long song but in this case I find the songs go on for a long time without really changing much throughout. Bleeding Muddy waters for example. I love it but after 3 mins I start thinking "ok, ok i get it, move on".
Again I do love it...... & I have been drinking.

I think generally the song lengths are fine, but you're right about BMW. It trudges on for far too long.

Yeah I kind of know what yer on about, with the majority of the album not uptempo, especially the second half(or B side in old money). I was looking at the track lengths and yep they're kind of normal times, apart from Tiny grains.. Personally speaking it's one of my least favourite that ML has done!

Bleeding Muddy Water surely lasts a couple minutes more than necessary. I've always suspected Mark was going for some sort of trance-like effect on that track, what with the repetition of the "drown in the rain/now the rain don't come" part. In my opinion, it fails. In Gray Goes Black, he sings "into the blood we sink and burn" too many times. That said, Tiny Grain of Truth is also a long song but it never bothered me.

Before reading this thread, the only track that ever occurred to me as being too long was Tiny Grain of Truth. But had never heard it mentioned elsewhere - indeed, I get the impression that most love it. It's one of my least-preferred tracks on the album, and think Deep Black Vanishing Train would have been a much better closer.
Thinking about the question posed by the OP and the rest of the album, I think only Bleeding Muddy Water qualifies for me - and it doesn't really bother me too much. Ode to Sad Disco is also a longer piece, but that seems to work. So yeah, Tiny Grain of Truth - much too long haha!

Ode to Sad Disco is also a longer piece, but that seems to work. Indeed. On that track Mark really achieves a hypnotic effect. I love the "here I have seen the light" part.

Played the vinyl to death years ago but in light of this thread, decided to revisit it one more time all the way through. Agree with most of the posters albeit with one major difference. BMW is the most obvious, way too long and repetitive. To a lesser extent, Sad Disco and Gray Goes Black should be shorter. Deep Black Vanishing Train should actually be longer. And Tiny Grain Of Truth? Think I mentioned it at the time, but I don't want that song to ever end. A 20 minute version would suit me just fine- And although this isn't really the focus of the OP's post, if I had to pick one song that is the absolutely perfect length? Gravedigger's Song...down to the second.
