Anyone who got it willing to share a picture of the "booklet" section of the performers on the previously unreleased songs? Only getting a digital copy tomorrow as of now. Couldn't find the info on Discogs yet www.discogs.com/de/master/34766-Mark-Lanegan-Band-Bubblegum(not sure if there will be an extra section for the XX version, or if they will be filed together under the linked master-entry There's no list of performers for the unreleased stuff that I've spotted so far. Soldier is beautiful, I definitely was not expecting it to hit me as hard as it did for an unreleased track. Great to have proper versions of Mud Pink Skag and Josephine too. Great package overall of one of his true masterpieces!

Alright, here are my first thoughts on the new stuff after the first few listens No real thoughts on the remastering of the "old stuff" yet; usually I'm not a person who really hears any differences. So I will leave those thoughts and notes to the pros and I might pick something up along the way from you. (Only thing I noticed is that Sideways in Reverse now has an intro-click) Heard A TrainThe first new one we got after Marks passing, so this will always be special to me. An all-around solid rock-song. As discussed before, some vibes of Jacob's Ladder, Message to Mine and This Lullaby are present to me. Union TombstoneAbsolute banger. Kind of sad this was omitted from the album, but I guess it is just a bit "too different" and didn't fit? This will be on rotation for a while! Josephine Seems to be the exact version which has been floating around for years, just a bit louder? This has been one of my favourite ML tracks overall for years, so I am glad that it is now officially out there. Not sure, if I was expecting another version/take. To me, it the rougher sound says that it probably never made it past the "demo-stage".
Kingdom The guitar tone and a few chords remind me of Burn the Flames from the Christmas Record. The guitar tone is a bit too "ringy" for my taste; still, quite a nice short piece.
Soldier Great song, but I think it probably didn't fit the record sound-wise. Would have fitted on other records; not quite sure which ones though. The flute(?) reminds me of Deep Black Vanishing Train.
Little Willie John This stripped-down version is very nice. Sounds like he is playing an intimate show for you. So in some regards it reminds me of the 2010 acoustic performances. Interesting that just a few words are changed compared to the final version. I like those changes in this one.
Blood (Crackers & Honey) Same thought as Josephine; seems to be the same as the known version. The "blood run warm" part was obviously repurposed in When Your Number Isn't Up; so this might have been an early shot at this? I think this actually would have worked as an opening track of a record.
You Wild Colorado Great recording. With the live recording from that era and knowing the sound of Leaving New River Blues from the "Troy-Sessions" already, this sounds pretty much exactly as I thought/hoped it would.
Revolver Nice short song. Singing reminds me of Willie John at a few sections. Guitar melody also reminds me of something
Leaving New River Blues Only song on here which has been published already. Knowing this one beforehand, it gave us a hint on how the other Troy-songs would be like.
St. James Infirmary with Mirrored melody - quite interesting. Like it! So, this one was possibly done before Mirrored came around and eventually got that melody?
Willie John This rougher sound could mean that this was one of the first ones they did and the decided to get some better equipment? Feels like you're listening to something quite intimate, recorded on a phone or so. The background noise/hiss is a bit too prominent for me and could have been reduced, but I guess it is part of the overall charme. Interesing that in the final version and this early one, the word "plane" was used, while in the Little Willie John version between those (at least I assume), it was "train". A little peek into the creative process and trying out things / going back and forth between several iterations.
Pure ReligionAlso quite a nice, quiet version. I do like the alternate lyrics - but I am glad that it eventually became Strange instead of Pure, which sounds better to me.
So, overall, I am very happy with this release and that we are able to get our hands/ears on those songs. Let's see what the future will bring us. Every little piece is appreciated. Random thought: Do you think that for the planned Brussels 2020 shows, that next to Bubblegum and possibly some Weird Chill tunes we might have heard some of those "new" tracks? I believe that both Alain and Chris were supposed to be performing alongside him.

I agree that the Van Leewen demo side is the real treasure here. The book too.

Thanks for uploading Josh's part of the book. I'm probably not alone on here that I don't own a record player anymore, so bought the cd. Which means £100+ for a book is a bit steep, so would be v grateful if you were prepared to upload more of the book. Maybe in the downloads section - not sure what the copyright holders might think!

I wonder what the reason was for changing the lyrics to Mirrored? Or am I just clueless and were there always two versions?
For clarification, the following lines are replaced with the lines which open the song:
"One reflection sees the other blind Look deep in each Two tombstones shine"

I've checked Mirrored from Hit the City (2004) and Has God Seen My Shadow (2014) and both versions have "one reflection sees the other blind..."
It's a weird change. I can't imagine it being intentional.

Took me a few days because I forgot lol Wow - good spot! I am very intrigued to know the original track listing for Bubblegum! Anyone know this? And why it changed. This was obviously a v prolific period for Mark and resulted in a stunning collection of songs as gathered up here. I'm also guessing from the comments of Josh H and Brian Klein that it all went very downhill for awhile after this.

For clarification, the following lines are replaced with the lines which open the song: "One reflection sees the other blind Look deep in each Two tombstones shine" Thanks for pointing this out! Upon listening/relistening to the "new" version vs the previously released one, I have this theory: The new release features the original lyrics/vocal, which were changed and the above quoted lines were re-sung by Mark for the first released version. Maybe he thought it made the song better. His voice seems slightly different on those lines than the rest of the song, a bit less hoarse... On the repeated opening lines (instead of "One reflection...") in this new release his voice matches the rest of the vocal more. It's not very obvious, but this is what I think. So perhaps they released the originally sung version on Bubblegum XX without realizing - or on purpose... Edit: the lines discussed are from 1:31-1:41

Though a welcome addition to the catalog…Sadly, my box has a side with no fill and several sides with scratches….. Wax Trax Records replied:
Hi Troy--- I forwarded your email to Matador and they're going to get back to me. However, you should be made aware that this box is out of print now, gone forever. So there is no possibility of a replacement, even for the one record. Despite it selling out immediately, they say it's never being re-pressed. Seems like a bad idea to me. Anyway, let me know if you would still like to pursue a refund. Sorry about the hassle. ---Dave
Needless to say, I’ll have to keep a defective copy for the book and the music that does play well. Ugh. Come on matador, how about some poly lined sleeves next time?! See light in the attics “Has God Seen My Shadow” glorious set for pressing and packaging ideas.

I see from the book pages above that Josh Homme says that he should have writing credits for many of the tracks from this era. That also sounds credible to me. A number of these songs have that kind of dynamic (probably not Mirrored though).

Love the set. Juicy package. Proper, decent audio. Very welcome on the shelf and platter; even more so knowing it's probably never going to be repressed.
BUT for dog's sake, there are so many typos and misspellings in the book's essays! Atrocious proofreading: e.g. Dave CATCHLING!?!?! D'oh! It's hard to tell if some essays are simply transcriptions of interviews. My inner Grammar Nazi is shocked. My Syntax Stormtrooper is weeping. So easy to fix and tidy, with just one extra proofread. But hey, the photos are beautiful and it is all excellent quality materials.

The incorrect "Mirrored" track is also a head scratcher. But Duff McKagan posted a reel to instagram of the Bubblegum XX unboxing and wasn't sure of the pronunciation of Alain's name. I giggled a little. Really glad my local store was able to order in the box for me.
