from Billboard.com:
The later years of Seattle rock act Screaming Trees will be celebrated with the upcoming compilation "Ocean of Confusion: Songs of Screaming Trees 1989-1996." Due Nov. 9 via Epic/Legacy, the 20-track set is drawn from the Trees' three Epic releases: 1991's "Uncle Anesthesia," 1993's "Sweet Oblivion" and 1996's "Dust."
"Ocean of Confusion" includes the group's biggest single, "Nearly Lost You," which peaked at No. 5 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart and No. 12 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks tally. Its success helped "Sweet Oblivion" reach No. 4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.
The album will boast two previously unreleased tracks, "Paperback Bible" and "Watch Pocket Blues," which were recorded between "Sweet Oblivion" and "Dust" but ultimately shelved. Trees leader Mark Lanegan is supervising every aspect of the collection, according to a label spokesperson.
The Trees played their last show in June 2000 at the opening of the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Lanegan has been the most prolific ex-member, having released six solo albums for Beggars Banquet and Sub Pop and recording/touring with Queens Of The Stone Age.
Here is the track list for "Ocean of Confusion":
"Who Lies in Darkness" "Story of Her Fate" "Alice Said" "Disappearing" "Ocean of Confusion" "Shadow of the Season" "Nearly Lost You" "Dollar Bill" "More or Less" "For Celebrations Past" "Julie Paradise" "Butterfly" "E.S.K." "Watch Pocket Blues" "Paperback Bible" "Make My Mind" "Dying Days" "Sworn and Broken" "Witness" "Traveler"

Great News? The old record company putting out a best of compilation? Come on! I guess this is a bit of a rip off - using all the momentum of this phantastic solo album to release this... I am rather sure Mark wasn't involved in the project at all.

I was listening to the DJ announce this news on Friday and he said something really interesting. He said that he found it odd that "All I Know" was NOT on this compilation album. It is odd. He went on to say that, that is the equivalent of putting out a "best of" Nirvana and leaving off "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Or it would be like putting out the "best of" Pearl Jam and leaving off "Jeremy."
What is up with that?

I am rather sure Mark wasn't involved in the project at all. Well, getting 2 new songs is great, and hopefully the release will give some impetus to someone to release some of the other material that was recorded after Dust. A fan from Poland has just sent me a rough draft of the 30 minute interview she just conducted with Mark, in person, at a show, where he does indeed confirm that he has been working on this project and on getting the other material released. I don't have the interview up as she's not finished with it, but she has promised to send me a final copy. So that, at least, is for real, even if you can never fully trust the press.

Is not the same of this? www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:y9axlfge5cqiReview by Ned Raggett Understandably, Screaming Trees gained far more attention during the '90s, caught up as that decade was in the Nirvana fallout and the fluke (but well-deserved) success of "Nearly Lost You." But the band's '80s efforts are worth a listen, and Anthology, cherry-picking from the three SST albums as well as the Other Worlds EP that preceded them, is a fair enough place to start. As is the case with just about all the other SST comps put out over the years, this is fairly sparsely presented and packaged — no ... Read More... Nice to be around some other Trees/Lanegan fans! i dont have a copy of it... nor do i want one. mark, for one, was really pissed off about the way that Nearly Lost You compilation was put together... i read an interview with him bemoaning the shit cover, bad song selection etc... which is presumably why he is involved in the new compilation with the unreleased tracks... welcome. nice to have you with us.

Nearly Lost You isn't a bad compilation, and an OK introduction to the band, but there's no getting away from the fact that this is a very hastily-cobbled together 10-track sampler that doesn't really show the band off to their fullest. And with no alternate/unreleased/b-side stuff on it, you'd be better off buying the 3 major label albums in their entirety instead and wait for the more thoughtfully put-together upcoming compilation.
