What would bother me the most right now is all the talking about Bush trying to bring back the draft...although I heard nothing official about it; is it just scaremongering or is there actually something true about it?
We still have a draft here but it isn't as threatening because Germany gave up invading small, defenseless countries to have our soldiers killed by rebels long ago...and there is always the option to refuse and do civilian service instead. Besides that there are serious talks about abolishing the draft in 2005.

Someone called me "daft" for saying I don't doubt there will be a draft. He said there will probably be enough small town retards to sign up. Someone else said from a tactical point it would be stupid because drafted armies pretty much suck. The way I see it, if Dubya keeps our troops in Iraq, he's gonna need to ship more kids over there to die so I wouldn't put it past the bastard.
I don't know, we'll see... I know I'm not fighting over there for that dumbfuck.

One of Bush's (and Kerry's - he doesn't get let off the hook with this one) election promises was to increase the US Army by at least 40,000 troops, but didn't say how how he was going to acheive it. A draft is more or less out of the question though, as the stink it would create (forcing people to fight for freedom is kind of defeating the object of the exercise) would be immense among the populace - although it might put the issue of conflict a bit higher up Middle America's moral agenda... What will most likely happen is that government will try to make the recruitment process a lot more attractive to people by making it more financially worthwhile - of course, as tax increases are not an option, this means siphoning even more money from education, social security and everywhere else he has already been nicking from

Wow. I'm constantly in awe of your intelligence, really. Although that makes me sound like a moron, it had to be said.
You're probably right.

well, I could tell more or less what going on in high school.
However, should be considered that the valley where I live is highly white idiotics republicans, but IT fucking amazes and pisses me off to see that among my fucking generation, among young people Bush has sooo freaking many supporters!! In my government class you'd be surpised to see that everytime there is a debate more than half of the class is supporting fucking Bush, god! it's really annoying. And we are always gettingspeakers from the army/navy etc.
They promise you *HEAVEN* they tell you that you're gonna travel you're gonna have money you'll be able to buy whatever car you want you won't have to pay for college etc
they don't mention for one second shit about the war, and god damn it, there are LOTS of kids who have joined and come to the school sporting their uniforms it's really sad..... even some of my latino friends come talking shit of joining, "they pay for your college " they say, well yes but at what pirze?! how could you be satisfied and sleep well when you feel that everything that you;ve gained comes from people you've kill. ooh!!! but "they are BAD BOYS" as the army speaker told us, right?? they are bad boys so there come the U.S. army to free the world from these monsters right? god, it is really sad, Iwas really sad when I heard bush had won. what a fucking shame people.

Amusing news story: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3987697.stmI think it was Bill Hicks.. speaking about gays in the military.. "Anyone.... STUPID ENOUGH.. to want to join the military... should be able to do whatever the fuck they want." And on a sidenote, I don't think there's anything that Foz doesn't know.. I think we need a new thread entitled "Ask Foz!" (I keep misspelling it "fox").

Outside the Showbox the hot dog vendor sells dogs with cream cheese. MMMMMMMMM!!! Well, word on the street is that we are kinda weird here. But still, cream cheese on hotdogs? That sounds icky. I’ve eaten worse though. I’ve eaten the mysterious midnight hash at the Off Ramp and lived to tell about it (anyone else?) so I guess I can venture out to hot dogs with cream cheese.

back to fucked up governments, the us has wasted no time announcing they will be testing smart bombs in my backyard. yah!
however, our cool state premier (god bless pete) has stated 'if they're so smart why don't they let them off on their own property', so it's unlikely to go ahead.
but then again, us bases are techincally us soil...

I wouldn't pay much attention to anything the Daily Mirror says (nobody over here does anymore) - it steals all its soundbites from the internet...

Unfortunately, you're not likely to get much propaganda-free reporting in the Daily Mirror (not since Maxwell took it over, anyway - it's been shite from that point onwards)... Mocked-up Iraqi torture pics, anyone?
I think a free and objective press is a wonderful idea. However, it's something not widely available in this country - not because of political pressure, but because editors find it easier to sell papers to people who want their opinions and viewpoints validated rather than challenged in any way. When Paul Foot passed away, we lost an incredible champion of journalistic integrity.

so, carlito- you dont think any other country in the world has the right to talk about bush's disgustingly fucked up agenda? no, not exactly. i welcome other countries to comment on american politics, just not yours. i just can't take any country seriously whose bars close at 11 pm (joke lifted from bill maher) and by the way, don't believe for a second that bush has an agenda. he doesnt. he just does the bidding of corporations and gives them whatever they want to stay profitable. no forethought whatsoever, and certainly no agenda. and most importantly, i still love you.

i just can't take any country seriously whose bars close at 11 pm That's the Great War of 1914-1918's fault - the law was passed to ensure that Munitions Workers didn't stay out all night and missed the next day's work. The law - like other measures brought in during wartime (like income tax, introduced during the Napoleonic War) - has yet to be repealed, but it's on the way...

i just can't take any country seriously whose bars close at 11 pm (joke lifted from bill maher) might wanna point out that there are plenty of 'bars' (i suppose 'pubs' would be what you actually mean) that have licence to serve til 12 or 12.30, and clubs (with 'bars') are generally permitted to stay open til 2 or 3am... i cant take any country seriously that does allow its citizens to drink legally until they're 21... (joked lifted ) and, err... i just can't take any country seriously that does allow its citizens to drink legally until they're (legally) THREE years past the age of being an adult (joke lifted from mokkly)
