So this is about the board basically... I've been here quite a while now, more or less sober, more or less happy and more or less serious. I know we've had some bad times, we've had old time members leaving, new peeps showing up and not always settling in easily, troll attacks, ongoing arguments and cyber fistfights between members etc etc. Lately we've had so many new people showing up and there's been such a Gutter Twin-buzz, it's brightened up the place no end but it seems it's gone quiet again, or at least: some people have left the building and are missed (well, some are). I know there's always gonna be people leaving and new people joining, and some of the new people will stay and others will leave after 15 posts or so. But i was kinda wondering: what is it that makes you come to the board, what are reasons for you to stick around, what are reasons for you to drop out, what would you like to see different or what would you need to feel better about the place? We had this conversation before, but there's a new group here and i'd love to hear other views and stuff. And i want the frenchy back I will start this off by saying i have always kinda thought it would be nice if people were to respond to others more, instead of just dropping their own story without really communicating. This might just be the social worker in me or maybe i am running out of reasons to threaten members of the board with maiming and bl00dspill, i dunno. So......... thats it

I had come across this board fairly often, at the beginning, just to see what's going on with the ol' Lanegan. Then I started to read some of the 'all the rest' stuff and was immediately thrilled by some of the stuff you crazy peeps posted. I think the Lana-elf did it for me... ;D It's quite nice round here.

The Lana-elf was surprisingly really funny.
I have been a fan of Lanegan for a number of years now, and none of my friends are. This place allows me to talk about his music and people actually know who I am talking about.
I first came here looking for Lanegan ringtones. I found this place through the Bubblegum liner notes.

I've been around & about since the first week of the old official board, around the time when HCTWC was released. I've made a lot of friends here and I'm happy that those friendships have endured even when either they or I left the boards temporarily or permanently. It's been really quiet here for quite some time, picking up very suddenly just as the Saturnalia buzz really stared to kick in. It was actually strange for a few of us, as it was almost like we were used to having really closed conversations and then there was all these other people floating about all of a sudden. This was a very good thing indeed though, as there was loads of content being generated on a daily basis to the point where I asked if it was possible for the number of boards to be increased slightly to deal with the number and variety of topics... ...and now that no longer seems necessary. It's strange that when the Gutter Twins tour is in full swing (and a tour with Isobel just round the corner, not to mention another album), conversation (and those wanting to converse) is all of a sudden a bit lacking. It's great to see old members posting again after a while (Mockingbird and eburg to name but two - and I even saw Katakuri a few months ago) and of course it's just as good to see new members get involved to brighten the place up. It's just a shame when the rollcall of people who used to don't come here anymore gets longer and longer... I for one would like to see DeWorde, Fluffygrue, Daisy, Kyleers, Cheekym and Realmofzaterra pop by again - even kideastwood, although I believe he's kinda busy right now. How to get more people to join in? Beats the shit out of me, and it's partially my job to make it as easy as possible to do so. Asking Mark to make more albums to stir up conversation's a bit unfair, as in one 13-month period he's been on new releases from Soulsavers, Creature With the Atom Brain, Queens of the Stone Age, the Gutter Twins and the imminent Isobel Campbell album, so neither quality nor quantity of output is an issue. Newer members have a whole host of topics to create or resurrect, older members can chat to each other with more intimacy (no, not that kind) because of a greater familiarity with each other. I really don't see how that is different from any other musician-based messageboard apart from the fact that the musician discussed here is a shitload more prolific than most others right now. Then again, I remember asking this exact same question here month ago and it died on its arse then as well

sure there are lots of people that I would love to come back, but you can't make anyone come back, they left for reasons we do not know, some got bored, some got offended, some were almost voted out like an episode of survivor (is that the one where they vote people off the island?) others were flat out banned, it sucks but its life, all we can do is trudge on.....all Foz and I are doing is making sure people treat each other with respect, disagree all you want, but at least treat each other with respect, its a cycle really...some folks have already said most everything they wanna say, so they lurk and watch but do not really participate anymore, its the new bl00d that brings up questions and different topics that may have been covered 5 years ago, I think this place is coming back actually, but it is what it is....and its as c00l a place as we make it p.s. I joined this place in 1970.....how fucking c00l is that? long before al gore invented the internet

i was kinda wondering: what is it that makes you come to the board, what are reasons for you to stick around, what are reasons for you to drop out, what would you like to see different or what would you need to feel better about the place? well... the funny thing is, i wouldnt even say that Lanegan or the Trees etc are my favourite musical artists. i think they were ten years ago when i was 18, but slightly less so now. i basically enjoy talking a load of crap with some of the lovely people here.. and i enjoy verbally scraps with people. anyway, i remember when i was really getting into the Trees, going to a friend's house and searching for the Screaming Trees online... finding Curt's Sweet Oblivion site and finding pics etc... '96ish, i suppose..? then, from that, discovered onewhiskey when it first appeared (many years before this forum)... start of '98 i believe. then my friend Rob started doing Lanegan/Trees-related websites and i got involved in putting chords/tab together for those. that ended up with the messageboard on screamingtrees.org.. and the wonderful Carlito (carlos the dirtbag) and many others appeared. then the official marklanegan.com forum came and went... and then this place. but then i deleted my account, disappeared and found more important things to do. and then i returned for no particular reason. thank the good lord, eh?

i really have no idea where i ever came up with carlos.......i think i was trying to invent a persona where i was like a bad ass mexican cholo.....which for those who have met me know....i am clearly not.
and this is the only place on the interweb that i frequent often, and certainly the only place i have posted. i just like it for information on the latest happenings, and i have found the people around here to be quite a joy.
plus i am obsessed with mokkly. i believe we are long lost soul brothers cosmically separated by the atlantic ocean. plus it's the only place i can chat with pretty girls cause my wife never lets me do that.

I was on the old ML board, then got busy, moved from Cali to the East Coast, and when I snooped around, it was gone. Then I found this place and a bunch of the old names were still swirling. It was nice and familiar. I ended up taking on more responsibilty at work, and drifted away again. But then Mockingbird sent out a signal and I tapped back in. Now I'm just enjoying the gang again. I'm really glad you cats are still around.

Cool thread! And yay for social workers I somehow missed all of the other forums despite being on the onewhiskey mailing list at least as early as 2001, if not before. It's almost unsettling to me that I could already relate to Mark's music so well on some level in high school. Listening to songs from Whiskey For the Holy Ghost or Field Songs still feels the same as it did then, except as with anything, each year that goes by, it resonates a little more deeply into all the grooves that livin' wears into a person... There's parts of me that just don't get to come out and play with most folks I interact with in "realspace" and the Internet has long been a lab and a catharsis for exploring all the dark and nerdy corners of my psyche, as well as a way to meet all sorts of weird and wonderful folks I'd never have had the opportunity to bump into outside of the electronic ether. I'd have been on a Lanegan forum much earlier than this if I'd been paying attention, as he's not just one of my favorite artists, but the one whose songs seem to resonate most deeply with me. I go through phases in which I'm really into a particular musician or another but Mark's the one I always come back to. It's done me some good to touch base with other people who connect to his music in the same way, even if it's been a bit painful at times

In 2004 my Mark Lanegan obsession started when I saw him live, I found the main site and the marklanegan.com forum where I misbehaved most of the time. Then it died, I cried, then got an invite for the new Onewhiskey-forum!! Been here ever since. I'm ashamed to say that I was a top 20 poster on the old board too. I rarely have anything useful to say. I'm still hoping I'll bump into Norm Block again so he can tell me cool Mark Lanegan (the artist) info again. Yeah, I got the scoop on the twilight singers tour! and stuff.

Cool thread! And yay for social workers indeed. Though i'm not strictly a social worker. Well, i am but i'm not. It's done me some good to touch base with other people who connect to his music in the same way, even if it's been a bit painful at times How so? I stayed cause Lungsey offered me biscuits ;D and my god, they were lovely, weren't they? I try to make everyone feel at home even if it's just to balance out the psychopath reputation i seem to have. Those biscuits were absolutely fine, nothing wrong with them, thanks for testing them for me. I got a bit confused when i put all the biscuits together and couldn't quite remember if it was the Hobnobs or the Caramel Biscuits i poisoned On the cock-issue: i come here for anything but cock. I have the urge to burn something just hearing the word "cock".
