I know most will say Nirvana, but its Primus hands fucking DOWN ! Claypool is Claypool, Larry LaLonde was a Joe Satriani student gone completely wrong and Brain is an almost forgetten sidenote in this ménage à trois of BADASSNESS !

Not Tim then? I kind of got bored with Primus (much preferred Blind Illusion and the very early stuff - I have Primus Sucks on its original Prawn Song label ) when Pork Soda came out. Other good 3 pieces: Nomeansno Rush Umm... Kind of get stuck after that

Tim was a really nice guy - even before their album came out, I wrote to them (long story - I met legendary manager Debbie Abono at a Sacred Reich/Forbidden show in Bradford and she gave me their address) and Tim replied and gave me details of how to get hold of the album. I badgered the crap out of local record store Eastern Bloc (who was also first with Sub Pop) and they got a bunch ordered, which they plugged mercilessly when they got to hear it. Result? A tiny tour of the UK resulted in them playing to 10-20 people everywhere else (think it was Birmingham when Les wandered offstage, started playing the nearby pinball table and the intro to Pinball Wizard at the same time) and to about 400 in Manchester. I got to chat with the band after the show for ages, and when I went to San Francisco a couple of years later, Les saw me in a record store and wandered over for a chat. Oh, for the days of artists communicating with their supporters as human beings rather than just using myspace (or should I say getting someone else to masquerade as you officially on myspace) as a means of some sort of easily-acquired demographic for direct marketing. Not sure where that came from, but a whole heap of bands/artists (or, to be more accurate, their increasingly-controlling labels) treat their fans as nothing more than a ready source of income to be largely detested and scorned rather than nice people with a choice about where their money gets spent. Not sure where that came from either. EDIT: Ooh - and Truly. Who are back in the studio

has the internet ruined this interaction or helped? I was fascinated that Daivd Byrne and Brian Eno used my business plan almost perfectly.....those fuckers !
I know some bands that keep in touch with their fans, but yes most don't have to do any legwork anymore

I think that's for a whole new and interesting topic (which on here means that it'll get 2 replies). In the meantime, I shall step away from the internet for a bit and have a cup of tea Umm. Wings?

The Police? ZZ Top?!
Kid, good call on The Dirty 3. Which reminds me that I've been meaning to buy the Low/Dirty 3 record for a while. I'll put that on my to do list today.
Hey, Low's a 3 piece band!
I'm shocked that Wikipedia doesn't have a list of 3 piece bands. I'm having trouble of thinking of ones.
Nirvana FTW anyways. Obviously.

i'd go with the police or nirvana. But that is also because i don't really feel i know enough songs by these other options mentioned. Wings is not a 3 piece is it? I know there's been the usual 3 but they always had other members in their line-up. And some of them pretty damn fuckin good too (Jimmy McCulloch!).

The Jam would have to be another contender, surely..?
5yrs of brilliance, and they (well, Paul Weller) knew the power of putting a fullstop on something.
punk... motown... mod... pop... very english... political... social-commentary...
