Willy Mason sang it on record, Mark sang it live - fairly certain in 2 of the 3 shows I saw, can't remember if they got to it in the 3rd as the building was evacuated partway through the set (a toaster caught fire in Manchester Cathedral*), and I was having a terrible time avoiding an ex-partner who decided to show up...

He sounded like that at the shows at the end of The Hawk tour when he sang No Place to Fall. I can't think of his name right now but wasn't that another singer? I know for sure on the album it is but not sure if lanegan sang on it live No doubt you'd love to prove me wrong but Willy Mason sang it on the album and on the first part of the tour but Lanegan sang it on at least three dates at the end, including Utrecht where I heard it..You can check on YouTube if you like since you don't find my stating I heard it credible. My post was clearly referring to a live performance so I'm not sure what the point of your questioning it was. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JmXMUxf5RA&feature=youtube_gdata_playerwww.youtube.com/watch?v=EmROD5QKCQk&feature=youtube_gdata_player

haha jeez. my point of "questioning" was that i had no idea that A. that lanegan sang on that song live and b. you had seen them perform it live. that and i've heard people say they love lanegan's voice on the album for no place to fall and the other song willy mason sang on while it's obviously not him. that's all, didn't intend to discredit you whatsoever. thanks for the link.

Really? my post referred to his singing it at shows at the end of the Hawk tour. I'm not sure how much clearer that could have been. Perhaps you could have simply said you didn't know that rather than jumping to the conclusion I am such a casual fan I didn't know Mason sang on the record . Of course that would have meant you'd have had to pass on an opportunity of trying to prove you know better.

The ironic thing about it is, the whole reason Willy Mason got involved with the record was because Mark refused to sing No Place To Fall on the record as he'd already done two Van Zandt covers (Snake Song with Isobel and Highway Kind with Soulsavers). But Mark ended up singing it on tour anyways.

I never claimed or thought you were a casual fan, not that there's anything wrong with it anyway. For the reasons caprice just posted I was just surprised to read that he did sing on it live. That's really it, I swear.

The later shows on the tour for Hawk didn't have what's-his-name opening and mark sang No Place To Fall - I think in Europe. I know I've got a boot or two of it, and man, he showed what's-his-name how it's done.

I know I've got a boot or two of it, and man, he showed what's-his-name how it's done. That's right, I saw Mark and Isobel in August 2010 at the Barbican Centre in London and for those early dates, Willy Mason was an opening act and then, midawy through the Maark and Isobel performance, Mark would leave and Willy would come on and perform the songs he did on Hawk (including No Place To Fall), followed by Isobel perfroming a couple of her solo numbers before Mark returned for the second half of the set. When I saw them in February 2011 at Shepherd's Bush, Willy Mason was no longer part of the tour (think he had his own tour in North America at that point, though may be wrong there) and Mark did the vocal duties on 'No Place To Fall'. I actually quite like Willy Mason's performance of it both on 'Hawk' and live, but hearing Mark perform it was something special.

Yes, indeed. It was included in all the Scandinavian shows, London,(Shepherd's Bush, not Barbican) Utrecht and Vienna. The video I posted for Vienna is lovely. I can't find one of Utrecht but it was a joy to hear.
