I'm disappointed I believe he appears on the song Fairweather Friends (how does that song sound?), but that's only what I've heard from reviews and such. Haven't heard the album yet, I'm still trying to get my hands on it....

I still can't wait for the album, love what I heard so far, but I'm disappointed if Lanegan is not much heard on the track Fairweather Friends It's definitely a solid album from QOTSA, in my opinion, but after several listens now I'm honestly not sure what song Mark is on. I actually think he's on the chorus of If I Had A Tail. I think it's just Elton on Fairweather Friends unless Mark is buried really deep in the mix...

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that looked "legit" that it was on that song with Elton John that Mark was. Anyway thank you for your good opinion on the record (I read a lot of bad things about it).

I actually think he's on the chorus of If I Had A Tail. I think it's just Elton on Fairweather Friends unless Mark is buried really deep in the mix... Yes Mark is just on If I Had a Tail I think. I haven't heard the whole album yet. Just like Trent Reznor is breathing on Kalopsia Mark is doing Oooohohohooo on If I Had a Tail. This is what Homme said in NME: "Nick recorded his record [with his band Mondo Generator] at my studio and he was dropping some vinyl off and was like, 'Er, need background vocals?' and I was like, 'Yeah'. So he sang on 'If I Had A Tail'." Homme then adds: "Him and Mark Lanegan are going "Oooohohohoooo". It's just friends, you know. And that's good enough for me. It's what it is, not what it was." www.nme.com/news/queens-of-the-stone-age/70446Apparently other musicians came by the studio not necessarily to record songs with but more for inspiration. So next time we hear stories like: this and that person is on the album, we can safely say that it means that just this and that person came by the studio. It's a disappointment of course, the more Mark the better! But as far as I have heard it's a pretty consistent strong album, something which might not have been expected with the announcements of so many big name guests.

NPR is live streaming (video) tonight's QOTSA show from Los Angeles 8pm-10pm PST does anyone know where Mark is tonight? as far as the new album goes, I didnt like it much first time out on my computer speakers at library levels but got to listen to it in full on my car stereo at volume 20 and much prefered it that way. And yeah Marks "vocals" on this one make the ones on River in the Road sound like Song for the Dead ... did I make the right analogy?

Thanks for the info, julia. Good to know. It kind of sucks yeah (the lack of Mark), but I def agree it's a strong album, been enjoying it all week. Glad I pre-ordered it!

I am completely convinced that the QOTSA album is the soundtrack to a musical. I like it quite a bit, but when I listen to it, i swear I can see the stage, the sets, the performers .... it was meant to be.

Oh, how did I miss these videos? (smacking myself upside the head)
And, actually, no, not like these, as I was picturing a live stage musical setting, and something a bit less like they got all jealous Lanegan had a song in a video game and decided to try to do him one better (kidding).

The Wiltern gig is still online for a limited time, if anybody missed it. Absolutely terrific. Also loved the way they incorporated the videos into the set.

First 10 seconds of that gig are hillarious - the lights go down, everyone's phone lights up

I have a picture of a lighter on my phone. That way, I annoy everyone The Wiltern gig is very interesting - the way that the band are (especially for the Like Clockwork songs) barely lit while these large visuals are going on behind them is very pre-Wall Pink Floyd. I like the way that this record, and the things around it, is shaping up to be a bit different.

Bingo about Pink Floyd! I had the thought that something felt incredibly familiar, but couldn't connect the dots. Jon Theodore will also change the equation of the live shows considerably (much tighter, but with less heft). Can't wait to see them later this year! P.S. I hope that lighter app gives you a choice of lighters

iTunes will be freestreaming ...Like Clockwork from tomorrow. Presumably they've removed the bit that links directly to the server file allowing everyone to download it for free like Apple did with Daft Punk the other week

so apparently he's on if i had a tail and on smooth sailing?!
shame on josh. don't use the time of quality musicians to let them put a silent fart on your songs. in my opinion it's a a little sign of arrogance & disrespect to nick, mark & trent. ok i think they wouldn't do it if they feel that way, but still..
the album isn't that bad i think, but he should have just change the band name for this. the band should be called era vulgaris. haha

Not really - friends were passing by, wanted to do something on the record, they were given something to do. Not that unlike what Mark does with friends who pass by when he's doing his album (ie, usually points them in the direction of the drumkit). As far as I'm aware, Mark is only on the song he has a writing credit for - Fairweather Friends - in which he can be clearly heard (esp. the "Goodbye Blue Sky" bit). Nick Oliveri & Alex Turner are also on backing vox, Reg Dwight is on the piano (he turned up, did a bit, sodded off to record with Englebert Humperdinck and then came back to do a bit more). According to the record, the full credits will appear on qotsa.com, but they don't seem to be there yet.
