It's people like that who allow the gouging to go on. Uh, no... it's the ridiculously low numbers of these limited RSD releases that allow the gouging to go on. Uh, no... It's the fact that mass quantities people buy them up for the sole purpose of flipping them. Open your eyes, wake up, come back to Earth, whatever you have to do...

It's the fact that mass quantities people buy them up for the sole purpose of flipping them. Open your eyes, wake up, come back to Earth, whatever you have to do... This. Bands should also respect their fans by not allowing them to get shafted. Paul Weller had a single out last year and it was pretty much unavailable to anyone bar the scalpers on ebay. After seeing his fans get ripped off he pulled out of future RSD releases. I also wouldn't be surprised if some shops or their staff keep back the majority of valuable stuff and are personally selling it on ebay under different names. I've met people who had collections of everything by an artist and come record store day they can't find the new single anywhere but ebay at 10x the price. Its time people woke up and realised that RSD is a scam and has sod all to do with promoting physical record sales, as if it were they would release enough copies to satisfy demand and they could do that all year round.

It's about time the rules were changed for RSD, as what was put in place to protect the stores back in the day isn't working any more. It does a lot of things right for most retailers (sales were up again on last year) but at some point the consumers need a bit of a look in as well. Sometimes with RSD releases, it's not what/who is on a record that makes it valuable to sellers but how few there are available. Record Store Day's "rules" (already outdated and unsuitable for the level of success of the day now) were tightened a bit this year to reduce the number of release and insist on a minimum number of units; with the number of participating stores rising and interest in the day itself continuing to rise with it (a good thing!), this isn't working as well as it should. Maybe imposing a 1000-1500 limit would be better, as this would see more stock reaching more actual fans, and the scarcity of presses would also push the number of titles down in order to fit the increased number of desirable stock (because let's face it, too much of Record Store Day is expensively reissued toss), and everyone should be happy for a reasonable price. Then again, part of RSD's marketing is the whole "get there at 4am so you can get the thing you want, otherwise it'll be bought by nasty eBaying types" without thinking/admitting that the ones who are there at 4am or earlier are generally the ones who have the stuff on eBay at 9am anyway, and if things don't sell out then they're not going to get all the headlines on the Monday, while they spend the next week hyping up the "log in at midnight 7 days later to fight over the scraps, but don't buy anything off eBay in the meantime because now they're not queuing outside at stupid o'clock, they're no longer our wonderful fans but evil horrible bastards" before everyone's servers crash and stuff that was there at 2359 is magically gone at 1201 despite nobody apparently being able to buy anything. Ah, I dunno. The shops seem happy with how it works now and the labels seem happy, so us lot at this end don't really matter. I'm not arsed about the gouging on eBay because if someone charges over the odds for something, it's up to the buyer to decide if that amount's what they're prepared to pay (ie, I paid a lot for something on eBay and am still just about managing to convince myself that I'm happy about it!). With this particular record, 7"s are priced high enough for 2 songs as it is so anything more than cover price I'm just going to say "no thanks", and fair play to those who will happily pay more. If more surface in a box somewhere under someone's desk then great. If they don't or if they don't appear digitally for a couple of quid, then I can live without it, because deliberately reducing supply to a level so far below demand to a point where it all becomes like the bit with the broken pool cue in the Dark Knight, then it's all a bit silly for customer and supplier alike. But, like an idiot, I keep checking anyway

Agreed...I don't know why I was called out as "people like that who allow the gouging to go on:. There were only 300 individually sold, hard to find...blah blah blah. Plus, it's my money. I don't come to your house and tell you what to do with your money.

Just as well, really - I bought a doormat off the internet whilst under the influence last week... To be honest, I'm not totally sure how many of these there are: stores say that it's 500 plus 200, Heavenly's pre-RSD email says 500 in total (so 300 separate). Without the records being numbered, it's anyone's guess

I don't come to your house and tell you what to do with your money. You weren't being called out. You were being laughed at. Of course you can spend your money however you wish. But don't expect to overpay for something, announce it to the public, and not be ridiculed. That's just unrealistic.

Out on the 18th of September, Heavenly 25 is yet another thing to celebrate Heavenly's 25th Anniversary for the benefit of anyone who hasn't noticed yet. CD1 is a compilation of tracks from the label's current roster (Sad Lover representing Mark here), CD2 brings together all 7 Record Store Day 7"s, so for about £2 more than the 2 tracks would have cost you on the day (or a lot less than they cost afterwards), it's all yours. Rough Trade linky here.

I listened to all of disk 2 and there was nothing that annoyed me, so that is a good start! disk one is sounding good too... It's unfortunate there are no liner notes about the record store day disk, but I love the write up about Mark Lanegan: "...Mark Lanegan only has to open his mouth and reviewers scramble for their thesauruses searching for new ways to describe his leathery baritone." LOL

Can't see anything on this year's list (so far anyway), other than a vinyl issue of the Junior Kimbrough tribute where he does All Night Long.
tbh, the ratio of novelty/pointless reissues to actual new stuff this year (3 Glen Campbell singles?), is shockingly crap this year. Ah well.

Hang on a sec - he's on the Duke Spirit record (UNKLE remix to be precise) as well.

Never did find a copy of Needle of Death for a reasonable price. Got fucked on White Stripes this year too. I'm getting tired of this RSD BS. It's not fun anymore.

Queued up at 7.20am for the store to open. There were about 20 people in front of us.
Got Iron Maiden 12", Metallica Live CD, Rocking Vickers (Lemmy) 7", Ramones 7", Jimmy Page 7", Manic Street Preachers 12", Bowie 7".
Walked into another store that wasn't doing RSD, and found a signed copy of a Bob Mould album I didn't have!
Good day all round.
