Another one for Who Will Lead Us? here... It's very reminiscent of a tune I doubt anyone here will have heard of (and I can't find the CD at the mo so I can't even say what it is), but it's just fitting like a pair of comfy slippers right now. That said, it's not really an album of songs so much as simply Saturnalia from start to finish, so it's not like there's any clear winner here

That said, it's not really an album of songs so much as simply Saturnalia from start to finish, so it's not like there's any clear winner here Agreed. I occasionally start into it about halfway through the album and play the rest through simply because I've heard the material on the first half more often, but I generally always listen to it from start to finish, and never pick out just a single song to listen to. If there's a particular song I want to hear, I tend to want to also at least play the song before and after it. I think it's easy to see why some chose "Who Will Lead Us?" as their favorite. It's easily a standout track, has a very different feel from any other track, it's kind of the moment of the light coming through the window on the album. I'm surprised there are currently no votes for "I Was In Love With You," as folks were really raving about that one here and saying it was a favorite. And I'm glad someone finally voted for "Circle the Fringes," that one was up there for me, but I had to go with "Bete Noire."

i voted for The Stations...i'm also very surprised I Was In Love With You has no votes. Those two and Bete Noire are probably my top 3 from the album.

I haven't heard the Jeff Alexander song you mention, but I agree with everything else you said, especially about Dulli's vocals on this one. A very theatrical sort of song, yet so intimate and haunting.

amen to that, i've been checkin' your posts lately tought about posting something but i'm not much of a "poster" kinda guy but i uploaded the song 'cause i tought you might like it, and before everyone starts getting all uptight it's an old traditional song so no worries..i would die a happy man if this tune receives the dulli/lanegan treatment rapidshare.com/files/98821816/01_jeff_alexander_-_come_wander_with_me.mp3.html

I voted for Seven Stories Underground but I gotta say that I was close to voting for I Was in Love With You instead. The track's absolutely stellar but what Mark's doing on Seven Stories Underground is just great. I love his versatility.

I voted for All Misery/Flowers. It just kills me every time I listen to it. I love when he says, "push you down in the river 'til you testify ." But I adore the whole vocal performance and the music, it's phenomenal from start to finish. That being said, I almost voted for Who Will Lead Us and I love that track too. Who Will Lead us has a gorgeous flow to it... I prefer the album as a whole though. It deserves to be listened to from start to finish.

So I'm expected to choose one single track? No fucking way. Back when I was only listening to the first 4 songs on MySpace, All Misery/Flowers was the clear winner...sounded so similar to Weird Chill. Now that I've listened to the album at least ten times, things have changed. The LP is divided into 4 parts, 3 songs on each side. Reminds me of the early Fall and their 3 song EP's. Anyway, between changing the sides, getting another beer or whatever, I have narrowed things down to A, B, C, D. Side C wins in a landslide...
Who Will Lead Us?/Seven Stories Underground/I Was In Love With You.
Yes, the whole album flows but those 3 have a special flow.

I like the whole thing for different reasons, the super mario brothersness of "the body" just blows and almost ruins Each to Each, but Each to Each builds into a great song.....

Changes for me almost everytime I hear the CD straight through but since I saw them on V-Day the song(s) that really gets me is No Misery/ Flowers. I didn;t care for this song when it was up on My Space. See it Live.

Have only listened to the album twice so far (I know, I know, but I only got it the day before yesterday) and at the moment I can't choose between Who Will Lead Us? and All Misery/Flowers. I think I might possibly be leaning more towards Who Will Lead Us - I think it's just beautiful. I'm liking Lanegan lifting his voice a bit more; it's like being pulled back in time, in a very nice way. Anyway, I'll give it a few more listens before I commit myself...

When you say "even if guitar is shite", what guitar part do you mean exactly? Personally I love the guitar solo, very much a Trees vibe to it.

the guitar solos on bete noire are complete ass, (dulli should know better) its a terrible mess, what I love so much about bete noire is how elastic the rhythm feels to me, its almost like it slides tempo wise, you are never quite sure whats going on and the fat fuzzy farty bass is just choice ! the keys have a great vintage sound to them also, its a great song that sounds like it could have been written 20 years ago !

Admittedly I know nothing about playing guitar in the technical sense, but :
pretty much sums up how the guitar solo feels to me. It's raw and ramshackle, almost improvised in feel, that's what I really like about it. Maybe you could explain to an idiot (me) what is wrong with the solo in the context of the song (in your perspective)?

the guitar solos on bete noire are complete ass, (dulli should know better) its a terrible mess, i like them. they're fitting of the retro vibe that you describe in the keys and bass sound. you could stick those solos on an early Stones/Beatles record.. even pop these sounds on something 70's and poppy by Todd Rundgren... there are no big modern distortion sounds, just a nice old-sounding guitar/amp.. (although it might well have been done with digital effects modeling on a Pod or something) what I love so much about bete noire is how elastic the rhythm feels to me, its almost like it slides tempo wise, you are never quite sure whats going on ok, i will note that you said how elastic it feels ' to you', but i'll give you a few bits of boring info on it... tempo = 78bpm throughout. exactly. played straight to a click-track so it is mathematical in it's accuracy.. (also means it was probably recorded in Pro Tools or Logic). time signature = 4/4. structure = intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/verse(solo)/chorus0.5(solo)/verse/chorus/chorus(coda) i'll explain why i think you're feeling some strange timing issue, seeing as it's sunday morning and ive nothing better to do... INTRO 1.5 bars = Intro of 6 beats on drums. starts count of '3'. (JP - THIS is probably what gives you the feeling of it being free and offbeat sounding. if you play the track from the start, but pause after the first half a bar (drums will have gone 'dum dum dum dum), then gather your thoughts for a second, THEN press play, you'll see how simple and straight the song is. the extra beats on the intro are deliberately deceptive, so Mark and the guitar riff come in, seemingly, halfway through a bar, and they're playing a straight 4 bar pattern). the rest of it is standard fare... VERSE 8 bars = Verse 1... 4 bar verse pattern played twice. CHORUS 8 bars = chorus... 4 bar pattern, played twice. VERSE 8 bars = Verse 2... 4 bar verse pattern played twice. CHORUS 8 bars = chorus... 4 bar pattern, played twice. VERSE/SOLO 8 bars = solo (to verse pattern played twice) CHORUS (HALF)/SOLO 4 bar solo to chorus pattern - played only once (this is the only change in sequence throughout the whole song, and it is sticking to a simple 4bar pattern, so still obeying all the rules of basic pop/RnB/dance/rock music) VERSE 8 bars = Verse 3... 4 bar verse chord pattern played twice. CHORUS/CHORUS(CODA) 16 bars = chorus with extended coda 'long dead animal is on your trail' repeats. i imagine i could quite easily pick out, say, a Spice Girls song that has the same sort of structure, time sig and tempo. and that's quite enough of this nonsense for a few months.
