Please don't tell anyone you think there are actual guitar solos on Saturnalia.
5 note leads strategically placed toward the end of songs cannot be called solos.
It's still a bloody fucking brilliant record but it's all about vox and moods evoked.

Please don't tell anyone you think there are actual guitar solos on Saturnalia. Listen to BĂȘte Noire from 1:43 to 2:20. That's a solo. 47 seconds of it. And it's fucking brilliant. And what actually makes it brilliant is how technically simple it is compared to how amazing it sounds. It's not all about vox and moods, it's about everything. Melodies, arangements, guitars, drums, EVERYTHING makes it the perfect record. Not just two awesome vocalists.

If people on this site weren't fanboys/girls, then they most likely wouldn't be here on the internet visiting and contributing to a website specifically created to discuss the work of one person who most of us have never spoken with.

True.
But there is a difference between honest appreciation of an artist's body of work and shameless glorifying of their grocery lists so to speak.
I love the music Lanegan makes but if something is off, I'm gonna call it that. It doesn't change my liking for his sound but people should grow out of this whole "The ground he walks on is fucking hallowed" phase.
We might as well all start going around in Nightwish t-shirts otherwise, you know?

I'm not glorifying Mark, i'm not praising his name, i'm not stalking him all day long. This is not about him, it's about a collective, The Gutter Twins. Mark didn't play that guitar solo on BĂȘte Noire did he ? Saturnalia is a masterpiece and it's all I'm saying. I'm not a die hard fan, I only come here once in a while that's all. Sorry dude.

Saturnalia is an awesome dark soul/goth blues album, not a masterpiece. It's solid and hits all the right spots but let's not throw around "masterpiece" and "fucking awesome" just like that. They should be reserved for the real deal.
Bubblegum comes to mind.

Seven Stories Underground is still my favorite. However, I can't stop listening to God's Children.
Mark and Greg singing: Strange the way you seem... suicidal You don't live at all So why are you cryin'? (*absolutely love Greg's voice on this verse, especially) Come and play with me, And feel desire It's all in the dark[/i][/b]

the guitar solos on bete noire are complete ass, (dulli should know better) its a terrible mess, i like them. they're fitting of the retro vibe that you describe in the keys and bass sound. you could stick those solos on an early Stones/Beatles record.. even pop these sounds on something 70's and poppy by Todd Rundgren... there are no big modern distortion sounds, just a nice old-sounding guitar/amp.. (although it might well have been done with digital effects modeling on a Pod or something) I agree. I like the guitar on the album throughout, and "Bete Noire" is no exception. I suppose my ears have become more modernized, as I tend to have a knee-jerk reaction of "That's cheesy!" whenever I hear a guitar solo, but I didn't react that way at all to the guitar bits on Saturnalia. And it's not because I am an uncritical listener who finds whatever artists that I particularly admire do to be beyond reproach. I found that the guitar bit musically and emotionally complements the rest of the song and hear a lot of the qualities you describe. Saturnalia is an awesome dark soul/goth blues album, not a masterpiece. It's solid and hits all the right spots but let's not throw around "masterpiece" and "fucking awesome" just like that. They should be reserved for the real deal. Bubblegum comes to mind. I think Saturnalia is better than Bubblegum... And words are relative. If I called Saturnalia a masterpiece, and then called Beethoven's 9th Symphony a masterpiece, I would not be suggesting that they both have the same degree or kind of masterpiece-dom...

It's not my favourite track on the album, but it's nice enough - it's quite important that it's there though, as the first half would be pretty miserable without it (Each to Each does the same with the 2nd half), giving the whole affair a much better balance.

Due to some religious stuff getting in the way of a perfectly good chocolate festival...and I haven't even been watching The Passion on tv...I now know what the heck The Stations means (14 of 'em and they're not on any London Underground map). And that is what I voted for. Also particularly like God's Children and I Was In Love With You.

...and I haven't even been watching The Passion on tv... Ooh you missed a treat there - despite me being completely unreligious and knowing what the ending was, I'm really enjoying it. It's really well-made drama, the like of which rarely appear on Telly anymore.
