"Rolling Sky" is formidable. A fabulous duet, and a very unique entry in Lanegan's discography.

Thanks. The only thing i wanted to know was if it was available as a stream.I've never asked for a link.check my posts.cheers. and please check my post: Mitya, you're newish so just to be on the safe side on the whole download thing: broken is a commercially available record so linking to places where it can be downloaded illegally is not allowed here. Newer people might provide links to stuff we cannot allow ourselves to have on this board. Past experiences have given us and especially Raeni enough trouble with that sort of thing. My question "are we going to have to do this all over again" was directed at you. It is not about people searching for recordings, it is that we don't want links to where to find them. Your remark that Broken is not yet commercially available to my ears is the start of yet another discussion about the same old thing.

Amazing album, Some Misunderstanding is currently my favourite. I find Red Ghost totally uninteresting (the fact that I generally don't like female singers may have something to do with it though).

Rough Trade orders shoud arrive to UK customers today. Mine did, anyway.
Bonus disc is a mix of the good, the mad and the obscure - as anyone who's had their hands on a Soulsavers Soundsystem disc will be familiar with. Probably not what anyone expected, but it's fun, it's cool and it's free.

The fuzzed-out electric ecstasy of 'Some Misunderstanding' and the down 'n dirty sexiness of 'Unbalanced Pieces' are early favorites for me (alongside flawless, faultless 'You Will Miss Me..')

All the Way Down is quite nice. Great gospel vibe without being kitschy about it. I wish there was more Red Ghost, so it didn't feel so...sudden when she pops up.

Far be it to add a dissenting opinion, but this album doesn't gel together for me very well, just nice vocals built around alot of samey arrangements.
imho I'd rather just listen to any of It's Not How Far rather than this one. I may prefer Saturnalia even
Shadows Fall is the best for me, and I don't mind Unbalanced Pieces or the guitar solo and choruses of Some Misunderstanding .. Red Ghost is ok, but that last song does nothing for me
I wonder which songs will translate live, aside from the obvious Death Bells ... I think Rolling Sky with a wall of guitars replacing the horn section could rock

Some Misunderstanding and All the Way Down are my current favs. I haven't seen anyone mention Can't Catch The Train, it sounds almost like a solo b-side to me, i.e. it's fantastic.
I think Red Ghost is superb as well, but I'm not thrilled that she was jammed in at the end and closes the album. I do think that her verse trading with Mark is more enticing than most anything from the Isobel projects; I think I'm even liking this female collabo more than the PJ Harvey material from Bubblegum. Rolling Sky is killer but By My Side doesn't do much for me either. What I would like to do is get 'Highway Kind' and throw that at the end of the CD; from what I've heard of that song, it sounds like it could be an excellent closer.

Like Foz mine arrived today with the vinyl of sunrise and the mix cd. Foz can you tell me more about the mix of the good, the mad and the obscure?
I agree with spent bullets the album doesn't gel to well. I've burnt my own version replacing praying ground with sunrise and moving the others around. im not 100% happy with it yet but its proving a more rewarding listen IMO. im gonna make another 3 or 4 variations just for the hell of it! Really good album though. personal faves - all the way down, shadow's fall, pharaoh's chariot and you will miss me...
not too keen on death bells and praying ground.
here's my latest version:
The seventh proof death bells some misunderstanding unbalanced pieces you will miss me when i burn all the way down shadow's fall can't cach the train sunrise rolling sky pharaoh's chariot By my side wise blood

I was going to ask this morning about the extra CD contents, and if it had arrived yesterday then it probably wouldn't have been a problem.
No way I'm going to ask now. Although I'm guessing Screaming Jay Hawkins in the middle.

Why not?
I think we have to be really careful not to get to conservative and overly sensitive in our views here and protect freedom of speech. Increasingly it seems like one has to rate an album 5/5 and provide no critical analysis just humble worship at the feet of their musical 'Gods' or fear an aggressive backlash from so called fans (see amazon reviews of neil young as an example). Of course purely negative comments and views are not helpful but nor is pure adulation.
We spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds on listening to and supporting our favourite musicians i think we have a right to discuss their new music in an honest way, be it good or bad. Imagine if this was a Dylan forum would we all be expected to tow the line and give self portrait the same glowing adulation as say blood on the tracks or fear the consequences? From a purely Lanegan perspective is Broken as good as whiskey for the holy ghost or field songs? personally i don't think so but i definately prefer it to the gutter twins album. Do i have to be careful saying that? Am i being unfairly negative when i say i don't like Greg's voice even though i feel his songwriting skills are superb?
Its a slippery slope where does it end? Im a LANEGAN fan that's why i love this forum, i love HIS albums. Praying ground and wheels are my two faves from scraps... and i really don't like Red Ghosts cover as much as the original, am i being unfairly harsh. Why do you need to apologise for honesty?
Its a sad day when a forum becomes so afraid of its own shadow.

Stunning track, surely one of the best uses of Mark's voice in many years?

I am loving this album. Heard about 1/2 of it on full-quality stream on Scott Ford Radio last night (happened to click onto Scott's blog as he was streaming it--good timing!) and am now most of the way through it on MySpace stream.
The Soulsavers and Mark seem to have a similar sensibility that amplifies their shared musical vision. I too find this album uplifting, though dark, but Mark's music has always had that quality for me. I've most often found my spirituality in dark places which is why Mark's music has been the main soundtrack of my life for years and years.
I think "Death Bells" is the second weakest track on the album, which is unfortunate as I love Gibby and am a huge Butthole Surfers fan. They really did bury the vocal on that one. However, "Unbalanced Pieces" is fucking rocking and I really do need to get better acquainted with Mr. Patton. "Pharaoh's Chariot" may be the darkest track on the record, very powerful. Doesn't sound like what I've come to associate with Pierce / Spiritualized, though I haven't really been up on what he's been doing for the past five years or so.
Favorite track on the record is easily "Shadows Fall." Definitely need to get more acquainted with Mr. Hawley's body of work as well. The cover of "Some Misunderstanding" has a similar epic feel, and is very moving. "You Will Miss Me When I Burn" is a perfect cover, Oldham's songs have always had this haunting fragile quality, hearing Mark sing one gives a different perspective, and gives the song more of a "broken" than a "fragile" feel. "All the Way Down" features a beautiful vocal turn from Mark, reminds me quite a bit of "Who Will Lead Us?" from Saturnalia.
"Can't Catch the Train" is a compelling piece of Lanegania that has that same classic sound and moving lyrics his solo material always has had. I'm not quite sure whether I like the horns on it or not.
I think the only major misstep is having Red Ghost do the vocals on "Praying Ground," the definite lowlight of the album for me. The Soulsavers re-orchestration of that track is brilliant but the vocals kill it for me. She just doesn't get what she's singing. It's not a torch song for a cabaret bar. It's a song of private suffering. That said, I do enjoy "Rolling Sky" quite a bit, not least due to Red Ghost's vocal--which does work quite well on that track. I think her voice pairs well with Mark's. It's only too bad we don't hear both of their voices together on the chorus.
I quite enjoy "Wise Blood." I think it would have made a better album closer than "By My Side," which otherwise is a gentle, uplifting track with a compelling vocal performance from Red Ghost.

So you should be in prison for hearing it,so should be mis Liza Richardson from kcrw radio an the other guy who played unbalanced pieces and all the others who have already heard it. I'm late on replying to this (because I was ignoring this thread until I'd heard the album), but... Jason Bentley is the Music Director for KCRW and Liza is a DJ for KCRW. Radio stations (and reviewers and others) are sent promo copies of albums early as a way of promoting the new album. KCRW in particular is very well known for giving airtime to new and/or lesser known artists and thus they get promo discs from all over the world. (For example, many many years ago they had this guy in for a live studio performance who was mostly only known by those who happened to come across him playing in an outdoor mall...his name was Beck Hansen... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beck#Independent_releases) So I don't think Columbia records is going to try to imprison KCRW DJs for playing songs before the release date.

im starting to enjoy the album a lot more when listening to the whole thing consecutively...rich marin is interested in cinematic scores and I believe is doing some of that as well as SS, and you can really feel an arc or sweeping kinda scope to this album...or a kind of attempt to catalogue an wide expanse of experience and emotion. im usually suspicious of albums with these kind of epic ambitions (and actually initially reacted against Some Misunderstanding because it sounded a bit too much like a 9 minute live GNR track) but am beginning to appreciate this album's ability to move between the grand, fatalistic-type epic (Pharoah's Chariot, Rolling Sky, Shadow's Fall, the final instrumental) and the more quietly personal (Can't Catch the Train, You Will Miss Me..., Praying Ground).
And I gotta say after a couple of full-album listen-throughs I suddenly got choked up during By My Side. I guess ending the album without lanegan, which I wasnt sure of either, works for me...

Hi all, I got my copy yesterday & have to say I think it's a great album, a really stylish affair & one that I suspect will continue to grow on me for some time. In addition to loving ML's contribution, the two instrumentals & Red Ghost's interpretation of 'Praying Ground' are just beautiful. The credits... er...credit ML with providing vocals on track 14 but there is no track 14! So is this just a prank to confuse the gullible (i.e. me) or what? I was hoping for a hidden gem, maybe 'Highway Kind' but alas no. Damn it, I WANT TRACK 14! Not too sure what to make of the bonus disc yet, not at all what I was expecting, but 'Broken' is melancholy, spiritual, & quite sublime.
