...in this month's Mojo.
Lead - and full page - review, lovely - again, full page - illustration from Stephen Rothwell, 5 stars out of 5 (from a magazine very unwilling to dole out top marks). Ooh, and a nice little interview with Keith Cameron. He no longer has the parrot.

If I get a chance to type it out (or at least the interview) later tonight, I'll have a go. I will be drunk though and have a huge swathe of my own typing-out to do, so this may end up being a fat filthy lie.
Highlights:
Was all written pretty much immediately prior to recording, thanks to his amassed bag of cassette tapes with his previous stockpile all being demagnetised
Ode to Sad Disco is kind of sort of based on a tune called "Sad Disco" from a Danish film.
Parrot is now in a bird sanctuary. "It was a very demanding bird! It would scream when it wanted feeding, which was all the time. Actually, in one of the early lines of Riot in My House, I mentioned the bird - but it didn't make the final cut..."
Shelley Brien is doing a spot of background singing
Lots of Krautrock (esp. Neu!) gets mentioned
Duke Garwood (who also appears here) LP lined up to be next, and new MLB album due to start recording early 2012. Well, that's what it says here.

That sounds great! I was wondering what was happening about the Duke Garwood collaboration...nice to hear it's still happening. And looks like we're going to be spoiled with another album next year! Even if it takes a year or two (or three), at least he's planning it and we won't have to wait as long as we did for Blues Funeral. Thanks for the heads up Silence.

I was gonna put a big LOL, but now I see it says "starts recording in 2012" so I take it back, remember Whiskey for the Holy Ghost demos date back to '91 and the pickerel songs are winding sheet outtakes and it came out 3-4 years later.
but waitaminnit! so based on this interview: for 8 years he's done nothing for the new album, it was all written prior to recording ... and any older material was destroyed?!? I hppe I read this wrong

The mini-interview:
Mark Lanegan talks to Keith Cameron:
Are you pleased with the new album?
I really like it. And I can't say that about all the records I've done. If I heard it now I wouldn't hang my head in shame.
It's seven years since Bubblegum - have these songs been accumulating over time?
No. They were all written right before or during the period when we recorded. Usually I have a stockpile. I still work with cassette tapes, and when I was about to start this record I went into my bag of tapes and they were all demagnetised. Wiped clean (laughs). So I didn't really have anything to start with.
Ode to Sad Disco sounds like your take on Harmonia - it's quite a departure for you.
That's funny, because I was listening to Harmonia and cluster and all the Kraftwerk records while I was writing. There's this Danish director, Nicolas Refn [Director of Drive], who made the Pusher trilogy, which I'm really into. In the second Pusher film there's a piece of music called Sad Disco, by Keli Hlodversson, which I particularly enjoyed. So I borrowed a piece of his Sad Disco to start my Ode To Sad Disco.
How do you decide on the musical contexts for each song?
Generally I write on the guitar, but this one I started with a few on the keyboard and drum machine, to do something different. With Al [Johannes], I can show him something on an acoustic guitar and give him a description and within a couple of hours it's done. He translates my flights of fancy but he also brings so much to the table.
Last time MOJO met you was with Isobel Campbell, who told us about your pet parrot...
We had to move into a place with neighbours close on both sides, so we had to give the parrot to a wildlife reserve. This parrot was wild - it fell into my girlfriend's garden. So now it's got other wild parrots to hang out with, I know it's happier. I won't say it didn't irritate me (laughs). It was a very demanding bird! It would scream when it wanted feeding, which was all the time. Actually, in one of the early lines of Riot In My House I mentioned the bird - but it didn't make the final cut...

What's with the Gutter Twins hate? That band was one of the best "supergroups" ever. Saturnalia was the best record of 2008 and their acoustic tours were some of the most incredible performances I've ever heard.
I suppose not everyone here is a Dulli fan. I for one believe his work to be on the same level as Lanegan at the least but I can understand that his singing voice throws people off sometimes. It took me a little while to get used to it myself.

Also, last I heard from Greg, a new Gutter album was pretty high on his to do list. I think it's still very possible that 2012 will be a year of recording for a new GT album. Lanegan seems to be able to take on multiple projects on at a time.
The quote from that interview about a new MLB record being recorded next year seems like a misprint or mistake. I can't imagine him going straight into another solo album directly after releasing one.
