Here is the video I took of the opening of the show. Please excuse my poor camerawork. I held the camera very low as to not annoy people.

Loved the Village Voice review! The writer captured the feeling I get from seeing Lanegan live. Watching someone dig down deep into themselves in the way he does, the intensity of it--I find it riveting, far from boring. This crap of Mark dissing the U.S. when he tours, especially the East Coast, is really starting to get old, though, and it's becoming easier to dismiss the notion of seeing Mark live altogether. I'm starting to care less about it and shrug off the idea that seeing Mark play live is somehow essential. I'd rather focus my enthusiasm on musicians who share in that enthusiasm. And this is hilarious: ;D

Mark will play in australia, new zealand and south america....but it's hard for him to sell out venues in the u.s. There isn't enough space in the u.s. for artists like Mark, it's all about the justin bieberS, the black eyed peas and the kanye west.

Maybe he'll end up doing a tour on a share bill with Qotsa if they release an album this year. That would be cool.

None of the reasons used to justify Mark's perpetual snubbing of most of the U.S. cut it for me. Other bands of similar or lesser means tour the States, whether to sold out audiences or not. Whether out of necessity, enjoyment, or a feeling of connection with fans. I respect that. I don't respect Mark's not doing it, whether out of calculated corporate strategizing ("the profit margin is 10% less") or personal preference ("I much prefer the view off the coast of Italy").
Times are tough for everyone. I would love to be able to travel to see the musicians I love. Maybe someday I will be able to do that. But the timing of the NYC show - on a freaking weeknight, no less - made it impossible to go if I took keeping my recent job promotion seriously at all. I'm beyond irritated that I had no chance of seeing Mark play with David Rosser, even while living in NYC. Flying to Europe, or South America, while nice in theory, is way outside of my income bracket right now.
Swallowing this shit for years has made it even less likely I would ever make the effort to travel to see Mark. That's a lot of money and PTO, for something for which my enthusiasm has been seriously and continually dampened, year after year.

I can understand how frustrating this lack of proper tours must be for US fans. I just realised that this Euro tour will be Mark's fourth performance in my tiny country within the last 2 years, so I guess we are really, really lucky over here.
But there are a couple of other artists that I myself had to fly thousands of air miles to see live. Thank god for low-cost airlines nowadays, wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

The lack of East coast dates is frustrating, so we just need to keep making noise about it. I can definitely be a pain in the ass for a good cause. and honestly, I'd be more excited about seeing all my Lanegan buds than the man himself. That is my main motivation to scrounge all my pennies up to travel.

That is my main motivation to scrounge all my pennies up to travel. Since those of us here in the Granola State (nuts, fruits, & flakes if you haven't heard that old saw) do have slightly better access to Mr. Lanegan than some of the US, I am rooting for the East Coast, especially for states I've never been to that I might want to visit...like, say, in the northeast...

I have got to say the recordings from this show are freaking awesome. CWTAB has some great players. These songs new and old sound great and fresh. Mark sounds great. Wish you Well!!!! I am not sure if they even played this on the HCTWC tour.

Wasn't it stated that there would be a more extensive US tour in May? I do hope so! Not that I live in the US, but even I find it kind of strange that he seems to come here all the time, yet rarely ever plays in the US. Not solo, anyway, there's usually a handful of west coast dates and that'll be that.

We already know they will be at Sasquatch in late May.

With all respect, I have to say, while I was so glad to hear that NYC set live, there is not much to look at. If you've seen Mark with the the other bands, that is what you get. The band is playing (almost perfectly) all the songs we know - without much difference from the studio recordings. If we're able to keep getting the live stuff, it is almost good enough for me to just listen. I'd go if he were playing within driving distance, but the music is better than the visual. It's a rough gig out there. There is most certainly a reason why he's selling the live CDs and $25 10" records. I'm a huge fan, but can work with what he's willing to do.

I can understand that, everyone is looking for different things. I really enjoy the live experience and what comes along with it. At SoCal Lanegan shows I get to see Raeni (who lives 2+ hours away from me) and some of the other local onewhiskey regulars. For most shows I'm usually aiming to be up front, I usually get to the venue pretty early to be near the front of the line and often there are interesting people to talk with. I spent quite a lot of time going to Nine Inch Nails shows for about 10 years. Now there's a band that didn't change things up from day to day in terms of setlist, because at the time there was so much stage/lighting/programming complexity going on. But that was OK. I did road trips with friends, visited friends outside of California, made new friends, went to places I'd never been, and had some crazy adventures. While getting to enjoy some of my favorite music and from different angles. But that's just me... (who is married to a guy who likes rock & jazz & all sorts of stuff, but doesn't like standing at shows and isn't into live music as much as I am so doesn't go often...but ended up seeing NIN more times than any other band. )

And I'm back on board for the third tour in a row to do it all again this year. Jason barely changes his set, but I'll still take days off of work and pay for hotels to be a part of it. It was not my goal to be insensitive to that aspect of the whole thing.
