Speaking of Mark interview released for Louder Than War, which covers you'd like to hear on new Mark's album?

I really am hoping for a release of his Big White Cloud cover, hopefully on the new covers record or on the Anthology!

I'd love to hear him cover Nick Drake's 'Riverman' He did a cover of 'Clothes of Sand' for a Drake covers compilation curated by Joe Boyd at the back end of the 1990s. Sadly - and as is the way of most high-profile Nick Drake projects - it remains unreleased.

Many (stupid) ideas come to mind :
I'd like to hear some famous 90's UK stuff covered, that could be interesting to hear his take on that period : Tender by blur (in a Soulsaverish arrangement) Bitter Sweet Symphony by the Verve
In fact anything surprising would be cool, how about covering the whole Appetite For Destruction ?
Or some Depeche Mode or Kraftwerk maybe, I'd like this record to be some kind of his American Recordings in fact, something with songs coming from a little bit of every music genre but heavily rearranged ;D

I bet Mark would especially do an awesome cover of Bittersweet Symphony. I'll add something stupid of my own. I'm not a religious person per say, but I do dig music soaked in religious imagery, I think it's fair to say Mark does as well. I would love to hear him do a cover of Amazing Grace. Something about that song has always moved me....I just see him pulling it off beautifully, similar to how Buckley pulled off Halleujah (I realize one is a Christian hymn and the other is not, but whatever).

Much as I love his Smoke Fairies cover (and vice versa), his voice would be better suited to their lower-registered songs - Living With Ghosts, When You Get Old or Morning Light would be amazing (especially the former with Alain arranging), a duet with someone like Kate Bush on Sunshine would be perfect.

Okay - I would still love to hear a recorded, studio cut of Mark doing Willie Nelson's "She's Not For You" - I know there's a video of it and a live recording - but it's not on any album, is it?

I'm coming a little out of (far?) left field with this, but I think a reinterpretation of The Dresden Dolls' "Delilah" would be fucking killer. And "Lonesome Organist Rapes Page-Turner" with Josh Homme could be hysterical. Dead Can Dance "The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove" almost seems too obvious, but I'd still love to hear it.

I love NICK CAVE & KYLIE MINOGUE and I especially think Mark would do an excellent cover of "Where The Wild Roses Grow" with Kylie. I love her voice when she sings softly and sexy like she did in this song. I think the contrast between Mark & Kylie would be awesome and it would be awesome if a video was done too, wow that would be something to see, Mark in Nick's role of the murderous seducer but Mark may think this is a bit too fanciful as I've not seen him do any role playing to date, however he is a talented artist and I can dream!!!

Man From Out of Town – Bill Morrissey
The house burnt down on a rainy night and I never did find out why I just stood alone ‘neath the silver maple – trying to keep my cigarettes dry Waiting for the fireman I couldn’t save a thing And deep within my home above the roar of the flames – I thought I heard a telephone ring The rain let up and we worked till dawn – just me and the fireman And when they cut the power the line went dead and I never got called again The house was gone by the break of dawn, the air was cold and grey I just set off down the road alone – seems it’s always gone that way
So young, so long ago, I thought I heard a train Calling out my name – well it sounded like my name Just a boy with no direction – I left my home behind And the sky changed colours once I crossed that town line My good friends did the best they could to hold me down with them But I took one look, I packed my bags and I slipped around the bend The lessons came from left and right – the first night out I found All the laws were not made to protect the man from out of town
There was a cold town on the seacoast I once tried to call home And the church steeples rose up above that town like broken bones Drinking whiskey with a catholic priest one night in the rectory hall He just closed his eyes and said, ‘you never know when Jesus calls’ Then his eyes got wide and he looked around and he just could not explain Was like he heard the sound of Jesus laugh, the way I heard that train
Now the years and the faces blurs till I can’t remember some There were women washing windows, there were salesgirls chewing gum There were voices in the shapes of old men kneeling in the pews There are things in this life a man just does not get to choose Finally I found a home in a tiny mountain town A simple place to keep me dry when the rains came pouring down A place to sleep, the rent was cheap, brick walls and a new slate roof The landlord said, ‘You’ll be safe here, this house is fireproof

I can't think of anything offhand except some more Tim Hardin would be lovely. I sincerely hope he does not do anything by The Beatles, Oasis or The Dresden Dolls, although obviously a cover by Lanegan would at least make it listenable.
It's too much of a cliche now but Song to the Siren would be gorgeous done by Lanegan.
Oh and I'd really like Roy Harper's Just Another Day or Andy Pratt's Avenging Annie.

I'd really like The Small Faces Song of a Baker, which I think The Trees did so if he didn't want to do that again then Call it Something Nice or Tin Soldier,he'd need a girl for the P.P. Arnold part but Polly Jean would do it just fine. And whilst I'm on Small Faces they did lovely versions of Red Balloon and If I were a Carpenter. I think a Lanegan cover of the latter would turn me in to a puddle.

In Every Dream Home a Heartache Yeah! Would be gorgeous listen Mark sing that song! In a recently interview Mark quotes Roxy Music as one of his main influences... Anyway here my dreamed covers: James Carr "At the dark end of the street" Mahalia Jackson "I'm on my way" Noir Désir "L'appartement" Fabrizio De André "Inverno"
