Hello Thank you to those who commented on Halcyon Daze and Grey Goes Black. I like most everyone here am always happy when Mark releases his music...old and new. As I have mentioned before, it is my hope and belief that you will be hearing more of the music Mark recorded with me in the near future. Randall Jamail Maybe when I get my copy of this Anthology, these other songs will be released at the same time just kidding dying to hear this new stuff but alas it still hasn't made it to my mailbox and next chance to check will be Tues eve as we have our national holiday on Monday so no post unfortunately.

I wish this has been a three CD set with a disc for his harder rocking tracks. I can't help but think if a new fan is picking up this Anthology as an introduction to Mark they'll think all his stuff is in a similar style. As compilation album I would have preferred it to have showcased Mark's variety of styles.

Is the purpose of an anthology to introduce new fans to the artist? I would say no. It wasn't intended to be a "best of". The term "anthology" just means a literary collection. Album also is a synonym for collection, so there is no connotation that would state or imply what exactly should be on something referred to as an anthology.
Going back to the first "anthologies" that I have heard, they would be the Beatles ones that started to be released some 20 years ago, which were filled with outtakes and different or live versions of songs we already knew, plus some that never made the cut. I think Mark's anthology falls right in line with that.
I have never heard of anyone using an anthology to introduce someone to their favorite band. What would happen if, instead of "anthology", they used the term "rarities" or "outtakes"? The same material would still be out there.
I, for one, am grateful for every release we get. I am also grateful that Lanegan has been so prolific in recent years. I like the wide variety of music he has been a part of, and couldn't care less what other fans, or prospective fans think when they hear something that could be considered too folky, or too country, or too dark, whatever the case may be.

This set was expensive enough as it is without adding more discs to it As inthefade says, this is not really an introductory set - it's too large for that - and Light In The Attic aren't usually in the market to promote current artists (or even live ones, in many cases). It's a labour of love put together aesthetically to flow from start to finish (or almost from finish to start in this case!), with a large bunch of extras thrown in at the end. The care that's gone into the set (that's taken a lot longer to put together than most people realise, and the CD/mp3 versions are afterthoughts by comparison) is there to provide, for want of a better term, a lasting memorial of what was produced in that time. Bunging Sideways In Reverse in there would have been a bit weird... As most of us here know, Mark can be his severest critic at times (a pond almost killed off WFTHG, for example!) so it must have been so tricky to get some of the released stuff out there, let alone the stuff that he decided not release the first time round!

I actually think this would be a good introduction to Mark's music, he has such a large - and, yes, varied - catalog, that I think I would play this anthology for someone, and, if they got into it, then introduce them to "the other side" of Mark - the harder songs. Plus, I think of the majority of his solo work as fitting more into the "less-hard" category, making this anthology seem not such an incomplete representation of his work as a whole. I've already voiced on here my opinion that, if you wanted to really sample/cover his whole career, three of these anthologies would be needed! I am very happy - nay, ecstatically happy - that Mark's music has gotten this treatment - a wonderful collection of songs including rarities and never-heard-befores that are all quite strong, very beautifully packaged and with lyrics. We could always ask for more, true, but really, this is more than I would have hoped for already.

Got mine after battling customs (I talked to the boss). Note on my door from my upstairs neighbour complaining about the noise this morning.
This thing is really the shit!
Unending gratitude to everyone involved. I love it.

Hey guys, 1st post etc...
After finally getting my hands on this beautiful vinyl box set, I was most disappointed to find disc 2 rather warped, and also found the whole set to be a bit crackly in places.
I own the Roky Erickson reissues on LITA, and they are just beyond superb. Got to be honest, a bit gutted. Might have to ask my store nicely for a replacement. :-(
Has anyone else had any similar issues?

After buying the MP3's at the end of December (they wuz cheap) I bought the CD's because I was excited by the packaging hype (obviously meant more for the vinyl I guess) to be disappointed by the handsome sleeves in the gatefold ... plain black envelopes I could have made myself by creatively sharpie-ing the white ones I can get at Staples, letdown. The booklet was nice to read along to lyrics never before published, and the credits on last page were nice, Debbi as a co-producer nice! But no credit for Doug Chatfield, taper of Lola's Lounge and I provided that info to Debbi at her request at least a year ago. And Mark or whoever should've tracked down the FLAC Whiskey demos and not used to my ears a low quality mp3 copy for Following the Rain. Blues for D vocal kills me lyrically, but don't think I have ever heard Mark so monotone outside of live full band recordings where he always sounds almost bored the majority of the time. Live in person, he kills it, but usually doesn't translate on recordings for some reason, unless he's really on or acoustic shows. The CD's themselves look very cool, but I don't see myself playing them as much, since I can just open ITumes and cherry pick from the MP3's. But I hope this sells the shit out of and Mark does another Anthology an album or two down the line, and graces us with another dozen not ready for LP treasures. And just a thought that is most likely fantasy, for a more rockin' Anthology 2 how about it's comprised of all live recordings and include Borracho, Winding Sheet>Because>Hotel medly and anything from the Here Comes that Weird Chill tour and a soundboard of that heart stopping On Jesus' Program from Showbox 2000. Of course it''ll remain a fantasy as I'm pretty sure Mark didn't pro-record his older concerts (or did he? )

My copy took only a little over a week to arrive at my house... and that's from the US west coast all the way to The Netherlands, of all places. Guess I got lucky! Liking it so far. I've always appreciated Mark's 'quieter' work more than his other stuff and it seems they managed to put just about all of my favorite songs on one disc. I think if I wanted to introduce someone to Mark's music this collection would be a great gateway drug And the bonus stuff is nice, if only for completeness sake. Some of it is good, some is so-so. It is of course 'unreleased' for a reason but I really appreciate having it. Though I do have to deduct points for simply copying a track off one of the best bootlegs ever and not even giving credit to the taper. I was also looking forward to the official lyrics, but as it turns out deciphering Mark's handwriting requires some serious effort

Review for www.meg.iewww.meg.ie/mark-lanegan-has-god-seen-my-shadow-an-anthology-1989-2011/Although Mark Lanegan‘s former band the Screaming Trees have had several anthologies devoted to them, this double album is the first time Lanegan’s solo work has been given this treatment. Rather than trying to cover his experimental, collaborative side, this collection focuses on his solo work, and very much on one side of it, ignoring heavier, rocky material in favour of singer-songwriter oriented work. So we get a disc of material drawn from his solo albums and another with unreleased material to draw the fans in. The former sequenced in a slightly odd way, opening with Bubblegum material from 2004, working backwards to 1990′s The Winding Sheet, before concluding with selections from 1994′s Whiskey for the Holy Ghost. Leaving that aside, it’s hard to argue with the quality of the largely excellent material here. There are fine dark and brooding tracks like One Hundred Days, Resurrection Song and Last One In The World. Instrumentation is generally kept fairly sparse, a little guitar here, upright bass there allowing Mark Lanegan’s voice to take centrestage. Wheels and Sunrise are funeral-paced soul, and Carnival features a hugely impressive turn on violin from Dave Krueger. The unreleased material here is a little hit and miss. The gentle likes of Dream Lullaby and Following The Rain are joined by more forceful tracks like Leaving New River Blues and an anthemic version of John Cale’s Big White Cloud. It’ll be essential for Lanegan fans, and the package is a pretty good starting point for newcomers. Will look forward to a compilation covering his various collaborations with everyone from Queens of the Stone Age, Isobel Campbell, Greg Dulli and Massive Attack, in perhaps 2020??

Not heard of any other issues with vinyl (my yellow one plays fine, which is always a nice surprise with opaque-coloured discs), but I guess the thing with vinyl in general, and especially now that it's mass-produced on machinery that was last made in the 1980s, is that the odd pressing comes out, well, a bit odd. There can be a bit of crackling during the first play or two, but this is usually static or paper dust and can be sorted out easily enough. Warpage is another thing though as that's something that starts bad and will only get worse, and any store would replace your set without hassle for that.

Thanks for that.
Yes, on the second spin the crackling had definitely settled down. Disc 2 does play fine, even though it is warped quite badly. If it was any other artist I would let it slide, but been as it is Lanegan it is bothering me! So will be contacting my store and asking nicely for a replacement. Cheers for the reply.

Got my box from the customs today after paying a small additional amount of Euro ;-( Now I have a problem: I ordered black and yellow copy and they look all the same to me. Same sticker on the cover and same number etc. Can anybody give me an advice on how to open the black vinyl box? I want to add the yellow one to my collection sealed if possible. I would be very thankful for any hint on how to recognize the yellow (or black) vinyl
