Got my CD today. Wonder if this was Marks last recording? Apparently the vocals were recorded for this in September 2021, so I'd imagine that there's a good chance he recorded some stuff after this, though I have no idea how complete any recordings would be (I believe he was recording in Belgium the week before his death for both Black Phoebe and solo stuff), though what will ever be made public or for general release is anyone's guess.

I believe you are correct, and that there is a private memorial service planned for Friday.
A few people on the Screaming Tress fan group that were friends with Mark have mentioned that they are attending and Charles Peterson added on Twitter that he would be supplying some of his photography for the service in LA, although wouldn't be attending himself.
Hopefully it will be a help to his family and friends with the awful grieving process they must be going through.

Yes, it's true. His lyrics do stand up well to a straight reading sans music, although the music certainly adds a lot, as far as atmosphere/mood. I can't find a trace of "Sleevenotes" or "Leaving California" anywhere on-line anymore. Hopefully some enterprising publisher will see fit to get reprints or new editions out there and available to the public before too long. I'm fortunate enough to have both of these, but had a look around for you. I can't see any Sleevenotes, but it looks like Heartworm Press will have more copies of Leaving California ready to ship on April 15th: shop.theheartworm.com/products/leavingcalifornia

I like Sleevenotes a lot, as not only does it give you stories behind some of the songs but you also get a few short stories/tales in the style of those from 'Sing Backwards and Weep' but from periods after that book ends.
Some heartbreaking stuff behind one or two of them and the fact he only started playing Strange Religion after 15 years due to Anthony Bourdain's request and then the difficulties he faced in playing it after Bourdain's own death, make those versions he's performed in recent years especially poignant.

Wesley seems like a good guy and I believe he took the time to fly to Mark's small funeral service in Ireland. Maybe I'm wrong but my doubts grow when I see Wesley, Peter Hook and his son take a picture together in front of the church in Killarney (where probably the Mark’s funeral was celebrated) and shared it on social network. It’s not my cup of tea. Have to agree that the photos were fairly tasteless. We'll never really know the motivations between releasing the books together now (I am pretty sure that one of the Heartworm e-mails they send out had only the second book listed for 'Spring 2022' before Mark left us, so plans have likely changed). It could be that he didn't want to have to face going back to it and so rushed them out, but we will all only be guessing and having our own views on it. Providing that they don't sell out of the pressings by the time I get paid, I will still enjoy reading the poetry.

I already preordered them. Mark was happy with the poetry, and looking forward to it coming out. By a weird coincidence, he happened to message me last August as I sat in the emergency room, having just been bitten in the face by a dog . When I answered him I told him what had just happened to me, and even sent a picture of my bloody lip and cheek. He "kept me company" while I waited, messaging back and forth about upcoming projects until I got called in to see the doctor. I had recently finished "Leaving California" and told him how much I liked it, and mentioned "the one he wrote with Joe Cardamone", because my shaken up brain couldn't come up with the name. Below is a screenshot of his reply. When I read the last sentence I cracked up. As shitty as it was getting my face bit, I went home happy because of the absolute coincidence of being on line at the same time, to get to have this conversation. Other than a brief note back and forth on his birthday, this was the last time I got to "talk" to him. View AttachmentI had some things I wanted to say to him, about Devil In Coma, [which is what we had been talking about in the previous conversation, when he was telling me it was to be a surprise release in Nov. with no pre-press] and some other small things, but I waited, wanting not to be too intrusive - I always waited, I rarely sent him any sort of messages, and when I saw him in person I always made what I had to say as short as possible, for fear I'd be a nuisance. My friends always told me it looked like I was trying to get away whenever we spoke. He said I was his friend, and I never really believed, not because of anything he did or said, but because I was sure I was not much worth his time and that if I just hung around and acted like a normal person, I would start to be a pain in the ass and he would start cringing whenever he saw me heading his way. I realize now what an idiot I have been. I saw plenty of fans march right up and talk, and I never thought any of that about them, and he never appeared annoyed by them. So don't do this, folks. Believe in yourself, and your friends, before it's too late. Allow yourself to enjoy all the minutes of happiness you have left to you. That's a lovely post Raeni. Thanks for all that you have done on this place over the years.

Yeah I didn't appreciate this one enough when it came out, but plenty of gems on it. Disbelief, Disco, Nero, Penthouse, Paper Hat, Two Bells...all golden. The IYEARA remix of Gazing From the Shore is an absolute banger, too. I'm not really a fan of remix albums in general, but I love the IYEARA remix too. I think it's far and away the best of all of the remixed versions of his albums that have been released. It flows well, and they've really made it something that suits and even enhances the mood created by the lyrics and voice of Mr Lanegan.

I did feel at first that it looked a little like commercialism, as I know that the second book had already been mentioned as being due for release, but it seems like the third has almost been rushed for release along with it.
However, looking on it, as has been mentioned, Mark seemed happy with the poetry and wanted it released, so I see no reason to delay it. I know that in Wesley's recent e-mail, he mentioned that they were looking at a run of poetry events alongside a small tour later in the year in LA, so I would assume that maybe book three would have been released in time for that. With that not happening now, maybe it's best just to get them out.
Wesley seems like a good guy and I believe he took the time to fly to Mark's small funeral service in Ireland. I think that (as has already mentioned), he would have consulted with the family before releasing them, and it will bring some money to Mark's family, hopefully too.

Yeah, I woke up in Paris this morning and started crying immediately. I've seen Mark live over 30 times in all the bands he's played in, starting with the Screaming Trees in the 90s up now. I have over 250 vinyl records that he has sang on. Over 25 test presses. I collected Mark's music like an insane fanatic, because his music got me through some hard times in life and I was absolutely proud of how hard the man worked and how he wore his heart on his sleeve for all to see....but it was always the music for me. The one thing I'm taking solace in is that I bet there is new music to come. When I interviewed Joe Cardamone for my podcast The Travelling Entertainer just a month ago, Joe indicated that they still were making music, so I'm guessing there are some unfinished songs to release. I bet that Black Phoebe recorded more than the EP they released, which should come to light at some point. I bet Mark recorded more tracks for the next Humanist project and I bet that he has some "one off" collaborations on other records that will come out as well. I know there is another "self released" live record that Mark would usually sell at concerts called "Knuckles - live at Turnhout", which is probably just a few hundred copies laying around someplace that will probably get sold at some point. I guess the point is that although I'm sadder than ever, I'm going to try and stay positive because even though Mark is gone, his music will live on and we haven't heard the last of him yet. Ugh...ugh...ugh...ugh...ugh! I woke up this morning, still gutted about the news. Apart from being truly sad for his family and friends, I can't believe I'll never see another live gig and that we'll never get to hear that voice in a live setting again. Your post makes me think that there is more to come though, which is something to take solace from. I can't remember if I imagined it or not (many Mark thoughts all blurring together at the moment), but I'm sure I read an interview only a week or two ago with him saying he has some or all songs for a new album done, so we may get one last album or possibly at least an LP, depending on how much was complete, as well as the content you mentioned. I'll maybe try and find it later. For now, just trying to concentrate on work, with Field Songs playing.

Some are quite honest and featuring the same level of darkness as Sing Backwards and Weep. I found some to a be a little conspiracy-theorist-ish for my taste with raising doubts about the length of time it's taken to develop the Covid vaccine, and is it all a plan to make Big Pharma richer, not something I'm overly keen on, but it's his work and beliefs so he is of course entitled to voice those (it ties in with the flavour of the interview last year where he seemed to hint he was being watched, intruded on by Facebook, so he's obviously got a lot of thoughts in those areas).
Many of the poems are quite absorbing, some disturbing and dark, giving an insight as to why he did leave California (doesn't sound like he's planning on heading back to the States) and the one for Greg at the end is very nicely done, reading more in story-telling form than most of the others.
Overall I found it a very interesting read.

For anyone with Amazon Music I believe that most if not all of the songs from the MoPop gig, including Mark's two, are available to stream.

Not sure if an announcement is forthcoming regarding cancellations/postponements but on Mark's official website, the only tour date now listed is July 12th in the States. I don't think his website is updated very often and may not have had the other dates in the first place. The May UK ones were up there as at end of January/start of February time (I used a link to grab tickets for a friend to Oxford), so have definitely been removed. I can't say for sure whether the Belgian one was ever there though.

Hopefully it's a heavy cold issue. When he was speaking between songs briefly to say thanks at the Roundhouse gig on Tuesday I thought his speaking voice sounded a bit hoarse, and he was regularly taking drinks, mid-song in the instrumental parts which I've not seen him do, too much in the past.
Perhaps the length of tour has also impacted him a bit. I think the Dusseldorf gig which was recorded a few years back was done while he was feeling ill, and isn't really the best sounding.
Hoping he has a speedy recovery, whatever it is.

Yea & Death's Head Tattoo is outtie as opener... Looking to be a 2hr show now ... The first 3 setlists on fm are exactly the same, maybe a cut& paste job there? I expect the set to change eventually minus a song or or two I saw someone on Twitter post a copy of the setlist from the abandoned Barcelona gig last night and it looked like Floor of the Ocean and Playing Nero were gone from it.

I'm actually really enjoying it.
It definitely flows together well and I think the songs released as singles sound better when combined in the album as a whole.
Really enjoying Penthouse High,Paper Hat, War Horse and Disbelief Suspension in particular buy I think at this moment, Night Flight to Kabul is my favourite.
It's an album it really sounds like he's enjoyed making and I'm looking forward to hearing the new tracks live in London in December.

The Bloodline song can be streamed/purchased as an MP3 from Amazon (at least Amazon UK).
As said though it was just a short piece for the show and only clocks in at 1:29.
