i don't think he walked by Harborview Hostpital, I think he took the bus (sorry, can't use my headphones right now). I do know the next line is "It stopped and 9th and James" It helps to live in Seattle and know that area some. I had a feeling it had to be a street name or something like that...

This song is good, but I hope, on the whole, this album is darker.

Lyrically, the song is plenty dark:
"The Devil's descended, upon some crystal wings"
Not too tough to figure that line out and it's dark as hell.

I doubt that 'sister of mercy' is a band reference - it would, lyrically, be odd and a bit clumsy. I get what you mean by the music thoug, but I don't think U2 or The Cure are that far off either. Think late 80s early 90s U2. They seem to touch upon some of the same sounds...
Personally, I was kind of struck by how well it would fit on the soundtrack to "Drive"

I get what you're saying - I might've projected my own 'never heard of Sisters of Mercy' into it;)

I doubt that 'sister of mercy' is a band reference My mum used to work at the local hospital which was run by the Sisters of Mercy... 'Sisters of Mercy are an international community of Roman Catholic women religious vowed to serve people who suffer from poverty, sickness and lack of education with a special concern for women and children. ' and Agnus Dei is another Catholic reference.

I really, really don' t like that. I can't think of a more off putting desciption than " sounds like U2"(except maybe " sounds like Adele"). And it does. Sorry , but no.

Well, maybe as an isolated side note... But then again, it seems like too much of a Tarantino-thing to do, considering his lyrical oeuvre so far. I might be wrong, though. I don't know the guy

He seems to be doing his very best to upset me with this song. Great vocals and lyrics but the music is dreadful. If it was anyone other than Lanegan singing i wouldn't be able to listen to this at all.

'A needle(?) flower there' I hear this part as 'I leave a flower there'. Either that or "I laid a flower there". I think grumpella nailed the "Jane's" part.

I think I'll love it more when I listen to the whole album and see how it all flows together. But I think it's an OK song with typically Lanegan mood-over-meaning lyrics.

i think that's what i like about it... Yeah, I've got nothing against that kind of lyrics. Most of his words are like that. I like it. I'm just not a big fan of the music, save for the strange harp-like sound towards the ending.

Maybe it's just me, but the lyrics are very specific and have a tremendous amount of meaning as opposed to just mood. Then again, I've had some hospital/rehab experiences also so maybe that explains it.

Yeah, i'm into lyrical stuff like this... I meant Caitlin's reply though, that is sounds like a disconnection between the music and the vocals - i think that is what made me frown at first, but is making me like the song now. Lyrically.......... yeah pretty cool eh

I wasn't a big fan of gravediggers song although it has grown on me a little. Im not sure i want this one to grow on me, I really hate bands like new order and U2 and that's what it sounds like to me. I can imagine how these vocals and lyrics put to darker more melodic music would really be something special. This sounds like a b-side remix of an originally good song! Hopefully the rest of the album will be superb .

It looks like a couple of office buildings on Google Maps.
