I can't think of a more off putting desciption than " sounds like U2"(except maybe " sounds like Adele"). I agree. I really can't stand U2. This song will invariably grow on me, but I'm trying my hardest not to listen to it any more until I have the actual disc...

i don't mind u2, it's bloody bono bleedin vox i can't fuckin stand Wow, so I'm the only U2 fan here. Not that Bono doesn't bug me somewhat, though. I think I'm starting to like this song more. I'll try listening to it with headphones... even if I don't end up liking it as much as I like Deep Black Vanishing Train (and to a lesser extent Gravedigger) I think it will still sound good in the bigger scheme of the album.

Wow, so I'm the only U2 fan here. Not that Bono doesn't bug me somewhat, though. Nope. I am here too, and I like a lot of their tunes up through Achtung Baby. They will always remind me of high school and college. I am also an Adele fan, so flame away. More importantly, this song is also growing on me. I am keeping an open mind and reserving further judgment till I can properly crank it on my stereo and listen to the album as a whole.

I am keeping an open mind and reserving further judgment till I can properly crank it on my stereo and listen to the album as a whole. Think I'll do the same. I want to see how it fits into the rest of the album. I still think we're in for a treat. Until we get our hands on the record I won't listen to it again, I fear I might end up approaching the album with a "tired" or otherwise flawed mindset. I enjoy pretty much all of U2's records except the last one, which I think is just too messy and unfocused. My favorite one is Achtung Baby, even though I think Pop is pretty strong too. I know only one Adele song, which is Someone Like You. Well, I wouldn't say I like it, but it did strike a chord when I first heard it. I was somewhere in Amsterdam and I was struggling against a headache and the blues was coming up and getting stronger, next thing I know I have wet eyes and some people are like "does he start crying now?" LOL

I'm glad he's not resting on his artistic laurels or anything, but I really hope this song is a stylistic anomaly. Although his voice and the lyrics are gorgeous, the music puts me in mind of the 1980s synth crap I tried to leave behind in my teenage years. Makes me wonder if Mark caught those videos of Dave Gahan covering "Low" last year and wanted to return the favor.

i don't think he walked by Harborview Hostpital, I think he took the bus (sorry, can't use my headphones right now). I do know the next line is "It stopped at 9th and James" It helps to live in Seattle and know that area some. Don't know where I got that the line before had to do with riding the bus (maybe cuz I was riding the bus?), but the line in question is definitely "I stopped and 9th and James." Silly me.

Is there anything of interest there? It looks like a couple of office buildings on Google Maps. Now, no, not really, not much interesting. But I couldn't tell you what was there circa 1996, though I can tell you the area has changed A LOT, the hospitals have been expanding, tearing down old buildings and putting up new ones.

Oh please .....U2 wishes they could have written this song in the last 20 years. Sounds like it was more influenced by Kraftwerk than anything else.

Thanks for your input everyone....I think we're just about there: Harborview Hospital
I walked by Harborview Hospital I heard the Agnus Dei Oh Sister Of Mercy I've been gone too long to say And all around this place I was a sad disgrace
They're singing, they're singing Away up on the hill They're building, they're building A mystical union beautiful and still But down here in the dirt They'll say it doesn't hurt
The Devil's ascended Upon some crystal wings In the citadel lightning Splits a cloud of butterflies and fiends And with a vacant stare I'll leave a flower there
They're riding, they're riding A hellhound down the hill They're sinking, they're sinking Into the ocean beautiful and still And yet it's hard to leave In wealth or poverty
I walked by Harborview Hospital And stopped at 9th and James Oh Sister Of Mercy Have I been down too far to say Are they supposed to be As sick as you and me OK. This has now been fixed and is the same as posted on marklanegan.com/

Eeehhh.., I didn't say that his music and lyrics is without any sense of humour, if I may correct you. I refuse to believe you could sing/write the line 'Oh Sister of Mercy' to a backing track that sounds like an '80s goth song and not be aware that what you were saying had a double meaning. I guess we're just different, myname. Intentional vs. coincidental etc...

The devil's ascended (descended?) Upon some crystal wings In the city the lightening Splits the cloud of butterflies and fiends With a vacant stare I leave (laid?) a flower there
They're riding, they're riding And headed(?) down the hill They're sinking, they're sinking Into the ocean beautiful and still And yet it's hard to leave (The wealth of poverty)(?)

I think it's "and yet it's hard to leave/wealth for poverty". We're pretty much there, I think

Read the Mojo review- it pretty much says that the album is unlike previous ones.
This song has tension between the downbeat gloom of the lyrics and vocals and the hopefulness of the backing. It has the sheen of sunrise filtered through winter skies.
I like it a lot.

I think it's "and yet it's hard to leave/wealth for poverty". We're pretty much there, I think I think you're right....I've amended the lyrics. Well done everybody! (Let's hope Mark includes lyrics with the album so we can iron out the remaining kinks.)

Thanks a lot for your work on this. Think I fouled up earlier...pretty sure it should be "The Devil's ascended," not descended.

Seriously? From a guy who called his last album (about drugs, death and divorce) Bubblegum? From a guy who lent his voice to a kids' song about a bear wearing sneakers? The guy who wrote "give me another blowjob before I'm on the nod" and "Because you're fire, because you're a Fire Escape"? Look at the humour of his friends over the years (Josh, Greg, Nick, etc). I could go on. His work is filled with dark humour. It's also filled with excellent wordplay and double meanings. I refuse to believe you could sing/write the line 'Oh Sister of Mercy' to a backing track that sounds like an '80s goth song and not be aware that what you were saying had a double meaning. i kept waiting for you to mention the bobblehead, but you didn't mention the bobblehead Thanks for the dinos commercial again though...that one never gets old ;D
