I already preordered them. Mark was happy with the poetry, and looking forward to it coming out. By a weird coincidence, he happened to message me last August as I sat in the emergency room, having just been bitten in the face by a dog . When I answered him I told him what had just happened to me, and even sent a picture of my bloody lip and cheek. He "kept me company" while I waited, messaging back and forth about upcoming projects until I got called in to see the doctor. I had recently finished "Leaving California" and told him how much I liked it, and mentioned "the one he wrote with Joe Cardamone", because my shaken up brain couldn't come up with the name. Below is a screenshot of his reply. When I read the last sentence I cracked up. As shitty as it was getting my face bit, I went home happy because of the absolute coincidence of being on line at the same time, to get to have this conversation. Other than a brief note back and forth on his birthday, this was the last time I got to "talk" to him. I had some things I wanted to say to him, about Devil In Coma, [which is what we had been talking about in the previous conversation, when he was telling me it was to be a surprise release in Nov. with no pre-press] and some other small things, but I waited, wanting not to be too intrusive - I always waited, I rarely sent him any sort of messages, and when I saw him in person I always made what I had to say as short as possible, for fear I'd be a nuisance. My friends always told me it looked like I was trying to get away whenever we spoke. He said I was his friend, and I never really believed, not because of anything he did or said, but because I was sure I was not much worth his time and that if I just hung around and acted like a normal person, I would start to be a pain in the ass and he would start cringing whenever he saw me heading his way. I realize now what an idiot I have been. I saw plenty of fans march right up and talk, and I never thought any of that about them, and he never appeared annoyed by them. So don't do this, folks. Believe in yourself, and your friends, before it's too late. Allow yourself to enjoy all the minutes of happiness you have left to you.

I really liked it when it came out. It was a little different, but I could hear the influences of 80s music I loved. And I knew I'd just have to wait until after the pandemic, but eventually I'd get to hear the songs from that and Straight Songs of Sorrow played live. But I never will.

Hi everyone, so good to see old friends and new here. Love to you all in this painful time. I'm not really able to gather my thoughts yet, but it's been nice reading all of yours. He touched so many lives, not in a 'sing along' way, but in the way that makes so many of us say "he helped me through hard times" or "he saved my life". Sometimes it would annoy me that he refused to say what his songs were about in interviews; he usually answered that question by saying that was someone else's job to figure out. But I see now, because when he sang his songs he had such an uncanny way of making it feel as though it was all directly related to your own life. We all felt the emotions, probably for thousands of different reasons, but we still knew the feelings. I can't even say all the ways my life has been changed due to loving him and his music for all these years, but one of the best ways it affected me is in all the people I have met, some of whom have become lifelong friends.
I only hope that the 'Devil in a Coma', 'Dark Mark', the man who called himself Old Scratch - is not too disappointed to discover he could never be destined for hell. He was too loved, too kind, and did too much good for too many people to ever go that way.
Everyone says that over time, this will get easier. Even though we'll never forget him, we'll go on, we'll enjoy the music of the many amazing artists he turned us on to, and new ones to come, and listen to his records, and feel a fond glow when we think of him. I get that, I guess, but right now I can't imagine what will fill the giant, gaping hole where his presence in my life was. I felt lucky if I got to see him once a year, on stage, while I stood at his feet. But he always felt closer than that, like I said, too many ways his presence in the world has filled and changed my life.
My condolences to his family, friends, and friends that became family. And to all of us fans, too. Everyone take care of yourselves and each other. And Mark, thank you, so much, for everything. I love you, I miss you already. A long long time ago you thanked me for "keeping the faith". I will keep trying, always. You are "a solitary star, shining precious light, light on me."
Love,
Debbi, aka Raeni

Sorry to a whole bunch of people I just approved for the forum, some of whom signed up quite a long time ago. I was delayed. Hope you're still there, welcome.

I do agree that continuing to SELL tickets at this point is stupid - they venue is only opening itself for that many more refund requests if people purchase tickets now for an unnamed date, then find they can't go. They should certainly stop selling until a new date is announced.

So far the only notifications I've gotten about shows I had tickets for where when they had actually rescheduled the shows. Then they announced the new dates and that tickets were still good.
My guess is they assume everyone already knows there will be no shows at least through the summer [some artists have rebooked for fall, even though they may end up rescheduling again!] I imagine the promoters, venues, and bands are all having a tough time right now trying to preserve the city to city order of their tour dates while they rebook everything, for every band, everywhere - and they still have no guarantee the new dates they book will happen. I do know they prefer that no one turn in their tickets - they want to reschedule and then announce that your ticket is good, in the hopes they won't be flooded with requests for refunds if they simply announce 'cancelled'.

Well the forum is still going. But there are so many FB groups now, that was part of the problem. I was trying to keep the site updated on a very limited time budget, but no one was going there to look at it. Instead you have to go to one of the many FB groups, and the same notice has to be posted to all the groups, and the same people belong to most of the groups and make the same posts over and over - it just seemed a lot of wasted effort. I definitely don't want to add another FB group. Also, Mark's management has changed and the new one hasn't supplied me with any information, so I can't get news any sooner than anyone else. And now if people want to know something, they go on Twitter and ask Mark themselves, so again, no real need for the site.

To me it seems a continuation of Skeletal History, both in style/structure and content.

I doubt anyone here is 'on the fence' about getting this, but if you are - do it. His writing style just pulls you along through some pretty insane and intense stuff. It's a great read.

The main site is onewhiskey.com - it's been there since the 90s, and at the time this forum got added many years later it was inconceivable to me that anyone would even know about this forum unless they were site visitors. Again, this is how much things have changed through the years. Websites were the places people went for solid information and to see what was really going on - forums like this were just additional places and fun to connect with other fans. But over the years we have lost the idea of a 'home' page or central area of focus. It used to be that everyone would contribute to a single source, so there would always be one place everyone could go for everything, and everything contributed would be properly credited as to where it came from and who brought it to the site. All that has been replaced as people now want to post their own information in places where it appears as though they are the originators of the information. It makes me sort of sad, really, as information is fragmented out in so many different places and it just takes more time to have to go all over the place not to 'miss anything'. Or alternatively, you now have to make the same post in many different places if you really have a desire to share with as many people as possible. And so many things, like articles, photos, etc, get posted with no credits whatsoever. It's almost as if by being the one to post it, you become the 'creator' of it all by yourself. The same way that people will get on a page and say "This has probably been posted somewhere but I can't be bothered to try to go back through all the posts and find it - does anyone know who played guitar on the 2001 tour?" That's why I always kept up the website - because you don't have to scroll through years of conversation to figure that out. It's all gathered in a very organized fashion, right where you need it. But that's no longer how the world works. I am not the only one who's sad about that, but this is how it is. It seems pointless to continue to update a site people don't even know exists anymore.

Thanks guys, just to clarify, the forum isn't changing. It's free, and all it requires is for me to check in once a day to approve any pending members. So don't worry about that. The main site will stay where it is, as is it. Since no one really goes there anymore, I'm simply not going to update it. Life has been kicking me hard the past little while, and I just can't manage to stay updated in the amount of free time I have. Maybe someday it will be different.

Guys, remember - I know 'sharing' music is common everywhere these days, but please don't use this forum to share links to free uploaded music that is being sold at shows to support the artist. Common or not, it's still stealing. If you can't get to a show to buy it, there have always been people on here or one of the many Facebook groups willing to pick up copies at shows and mail them to you.

I had the same issue with Amazon. I contacted them asking for my autorip and they added it within 5 minutes so might be worth doing that too. Thanks for that idea, I asked them and they let me have the AutoRip too, so at least now I can put it on my iPod and finally hear it!

Really seems as though in this day and age, everyone should have access to the album at the same time. Yes, almost every album gets leaked and if you have to go that route you do, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about all the fans who preorder a release months in advance - because everything seems to be done by preorder now. So you anticipate hearing it, you pay months ahead and anticipate receiving it - and then find you're not going to get it when everyone else is. I did not order vinyl because I don't have a place to play it. I mainly listen in my car anyhow, but I still choose to buy a physical CD because I like to have something to hold onto and look at and put on my shelf when it's something I really care about. I don't know how to do this anymore. Used to be simple - order it from whoever your favorite seller is and be done. Now - I feel like I have to order it from the label directly. But if I order from a label that is outside my country, it costs a whole lot in overseas shipping, and it tends to arrive later than release date. So...maybe order from my county's affiliate for the label? I did that earlier this year with another preordered record, and I received not days, but WEEKS after the release date. So this time I decided just go straight to Amazon. It's easy, they get stuff to me on time, and it should be fine. Except Amazon sent out an email that although the UK release date is 10/18, I won't receive mine until 10/22 - I'm guessing because the US releases happen on Tuesday instead of Friday? How does that make sense? So if I ordered vinyl, I'd have it already? Was that posted somewhere and I missed it? Not picking on just Mark's record or label, I have been finding this every time I preorder lately. It's a crap shoot who's going to get it to you when it comes out, and that sucks. At least let everyone who ordered it have access to a digital copy at the same time, maybe? It's frustrating, and one more thing I don't have time to try to keep track of - who gets what to who more quickly. I just want to BUY it, and GET it - when did that become so difficult? In the meantime I will just have to read what everybody else thinks of it because somehow I chose the 'wrong' way to buy it. Sorry for the rant, but if labels are going to be pissed about how low record sales are these days, they need to keep better control over how things are released and allow everyone who pays in advance to get things when they come out. /rant

A project with the two of them has been mentioned several times in recent press, it's called Black Phoebe and there was talk of a release sometime over the next couple years. Always possible that could be a tour someday.

The lyrics on the website were mainly just what I could hear, unless they say 'official'. At one point Mark wanted to put the real lyrics out there, so he actually sent me some for what at the time were the newest albums. Then he never finished transcribing all the old albums, so those are not the actual lyrics, just what I heard. Now that the book is out, it makes everything easier!

Is there anyone here who is experienced in setting up Wikipedia pages that would be willing to help someone out who is trying to get one going? If so PM me your email and I will pass it along to the person looking for info. He is starting up a page for an artist friend. Thanks!
